Back with a Paladin

It's been about 5/6 years since I played this game and everything I had was donated so I'll be starting from scratch .... or I have started from scratch.

I'm thinking of making a zeal/holy freeze paladin. Are these of any use? Anyone got any tips regarding equipment/skills etc. I'm completly out of my depth after the long time away.

Lots of speed, lots of crushing blow if you can get it, your attacks and holy freeze aura will slow everything in sight, so with a decent damage merc you'll clean up fairly well and you'll be loaded with cb for bosses.

Cheers Tai, any suggestions for the mercs? They weren't really involved last time I played.

Also, do you know if pumping points into Freeze resistance affects damage of cold attacks?

Well, it depends on what you're planning on doing with the pally, but I'd obviously steer clear of Holy Freeze, Prayer, Thorns or any of the a1 or a3 mercs, they won't make nearly as good of use of your freeze as is possible.

I'd tend to lean towards a Might merc, as his large Physical damage would supplement your cold, and the dmg boost it gives you isn't going to hurt.

Make sure you have a Fast, low damage weapon for CS and Throne though, IM hurts.

Yes. If you hold the mouse cursor over holy freeze in the skill tree, it will tell you the synergies. In fact, this is the case for all skills :)

Untwinked you'll probably need a Blessed Aim Merc since your only source of AR will be your Zeal skill, which should really remain at slvl 4 until you get your aura damage up to a comfortable level.

A 'Steel' Flail can easily carry you through Normal, at which point you'll hopefully have the Io rune required to make a 'Black' Flail or Knout.

Use your fists, or a really low physical damage wand with high elemental damage mods on it when you are in Iron Maiden area's. Seriously, this isn't advice you should think about, If you Zeal in Iron Maiden area's you will die.

Since you've been away a while here's a refresher:
- Oblivian Knights (known as OK's from now on) are the only monster that can cast Iron Maiden.
- In Norm they only Appear in the Chaos Santuary
- In NM/Hell they appear in the Chaos Santuary as well, but You will find them in The World Stone Keep level 3, and in the Throne of Distruction as well
- They can also roll in Uber Izuals layer but I doubt you will have to worry about that anytime soon.

Iron Maiden has been beefed up since you last played I believe and it now always returns your damaged multiplyed by a number greater then 1
Example:
You're Zeal does 100-200 physical damage and you have 600 Life.
An OK casts a level 1 Iron Maiden (which returns 200% damage) on you right as you click the attack button and you begin your Zeal. Best case scenario you do 1000 damage back on yourself and die in 3 Zeals, worst case you do 2000 damage to yourself and die in 2 Zeals.

I generally make holy shock auradins because you get a lot more damage.

Holy freeze should work also. You can get the Generals Flail for 50% slow and glegaws gloves for another 25%. These combined with holy freeze aura will make the bad guys look like statues.

Good low level stuff is angelic with glegaws set.

Also, have someone get you a hellforge hammer. It is the best low lvls weapon available. No requirements at all, lots of damage and fire resist.

Fill up ur pack with cold, lightning, fire and poison damage charms.

Level 25 get spirit sword+shield.

Strength runeword gives crush blow inexpensively.

Also, fight to get as much life as possible. I try to put 4 of every 5 points in vitality.

I used the unique dagger which does 180 poison damage and 2-11 physical damage with holy shock aura to do normal Diablo without problems. Kept an eye on curses and have prayer merc. I will be getting cleansing to reduce length of curses.

Complete Act 3 Flail is leaps and bounds better.

1) Looks cooler.
2) Faster.

Stats on flail:
1-15 damage
+40 AR
+1-40 Light Damage
+6% Dual Leech
+50% IAS

Stats on Hammer:
6-15 damage
+35 Defense
+40% Fire Resist
+5-20 Fire Damage

I favor the flail, myself.

What is this Flail? and how much does one go for on e-bay?
Are you seriouse ?

The flail is the one you make in act 1 to smash the compelling orb and get access to meph.

Instead of smashing it, just mule it off and then use it on low level chars.
