back to d2 - why is grief weapon so good?

I see the mods, see that has itd - but how much damage is this thing gonna actually do? Is it more powerful than a botd? I just started playing again and I always like to set my sights on getting the strongest weapon i can for my char (im building a hammerdin with zeal on switch) and everywhere i read grief seems like its the best item but why?

the +damage on a grief adds to the BASE damage of your weapon (and shield if your smiting). and yes, it will out damage an ebotd (actually, if we're talking zerks, an e-botdz will have a slightly higher max damage, but far, far lower average & minimum damage.

to put it another way: even the crappiest +340 damage grief on bnet is the equivalent of a +90 to Holy Shield weapon in terms of smite damage.
