Attack Rating

Well, I just traded in my trusted Blessed Aim merc for a Holy Freeze one (I'm beginning to regret it) and now I can't hit a damned thing. Well, I can, but I'm using a Pheonix Strike Assassin, and my chance to hit with PS went from 95 to 89, and my reg attack went from 95 to 78. What can I do to increase attack rating? I'm using Bartucs, and I have one Ravenfrost...Is there any way to get some good attack rating for cheap? I don't find many uniques...I was given these two items by a very nice person :thumbsup:.

Demon limb for enchant charges

These are the best way.

Well 95 is max, and 89 with PS isnt going to be that much of a noticable thing, especially when assassins are so quick. Ideally, you'd want your regular attacks to get into the 80's, and this can be done with the stuff MOFO suggested.

Note that the chance to hit displayed on your character screen if off by a lot. I'd shoot for about 10k AR in hell if you want a good chance to hit stuff.

Um. I have a zealot using an upped Headstriker (for style) with about 6k AR and he does fine.

How deep in Hell are you? I'd say NF is pretty accurate with the 10k ar thing (it's what I shoot for with most melee builds), but I didn't realize the char screen was bugged.

the LCS is called so for a reason;)

(LCS stands for lying character screen)

if you want to hit in hell with a melee build nightfish is correct.

Horribly bugged. Just take a low damage weapon and swing at stuff and count the hits you get in. Level matters a lot, too. But since my chars are usually 75 by the time they enter hell and 80 by the time they leave pretty much everything will have a higher level which means I need even more AR.

And you gotta factor in any -% target defence you might have. While -25% defence doesn't actually translate to +25% chance to hit it is kinda helpful. Also, be aware the ignore target defence doesn't work when you need it most: vs bosses & champs.

Of course you can kill with a 50% chance to hit but it sorta makes no sense to milk every bit of ED when you could improve your damage over time a lot more by increasing your AR.

Good to know, :thumbsup: I probably didn't notice anything wrong since I usually have close to 10k ar anyways, but now at least I have been warned about the LCS.

Chance to be hit (you know, what you see when hovering the mouse over defence) is equally bugged. Just fyi ;) Blocking and stuff is accurate.

Patriarch, and I usually fight with him in Act 5. But he is lvl 87 now, so that probably helps. Through the game I mostly used Nord's tenderizer, which has a pretty massive AR boost (like 150%). Probably now that he's such a high lvl it doesn't matter as much.

And actually it's only 4.5 k. Sure he doesn't hit every time, but he hardly needs to.

Thanks for the replies

Should I socket my Bartucs with an Eth, or would that be a waste? My attack speed is plenty high right now, so Shael wouldn't do much.

Yep, just did a Baal run decreped the whole time (on purpose, except against lister who was immune to physical) and didn't have any problems. I think the numbers are accurate. Maybe they aren't accurate until you're high enough level?

Based on my experience you can get away with like ~5,5k AR in hell. But it's comfortable with ~8k. An other way of looking at it, is that AR, as well as average damage and attack speed, determinates your damage over time. More AR (or well, better chance to hit, as there're other ways of achieving that) means more damage dealt.

bah example of why high ar is useful(taken from the fact and formula archive)

Chance to Hit

100 * AR / (AR + DR) * 2 * alvl / (alvl + dlvl)
AR = Attack Rating; alvl = Level of Attacker; dlvl = Level of Defender; DR = Defense Rating

Note: Attacks will never have less than 5% chance to hit nor more than 95% chance to hit.

Final chance to hit is truncated.

Example

I have an AR of 10,000. I am lvl85 (attacker) and the Defender is lvl90 with a defense of 5000

= 100 * AR / (AR + DR) * 2 * alvl / (alvl + dlvl)
= 100 * 10000/ (10000 + 5000) * 2 * 85/ ( 85 + 90)
= 1000000/(10000 + 5000) * 2 * 85/(85 + 90)
= 1000000/(15000) * 2 * 85/(175)
= 1000000/(15000) * 2 * 85/(175)
= 66.667 * 2 * 85/175
= 133.333 * 85/175
= 11333.333/175
= 64.761% chance to hit.


those 10k ar didnt give such a good chance to hit after all

It's not a matter of being able to get away with something. You can get away with a 5% chance to hit if you want. It's a matter of getting the most out of your char. People go to extreme lenghts to coax another 100 damage out of their gear but more often than not another 10% chance to hit would do loads more.

All I'm saying is that the numbers on my LCS actually seem to be pretty accurate.

I just want to point out that the formula lone_wolf gave was kind of extreme.

According to Arreat Summit(I know, I know, not the best source of technical information) Hell Baal doesn't even pass 3k defense. Most normal monsters don't even get above 2k. The only kind that would even get near 5k defense is a Stone Skin monster and they get 3x defense, IIRC. So 10,000 AR is probably a reasonable amount for hitting most non-act-boss and non-stone-skin monsters.
