Ascent to 99, Izuna Reaches the Vertical Limit

    It all started with a rather innocuous question by Kitteh in the first untwinked 99 thread.

    "Would anybody be interested in another go of this in the future?"

    Why yes, let the madness begin.

    Journey

    Level 1
    Questing was straight forward. Progress through the acts as quickly as possible on players 1 and power level at Pindle as needed. Izuna went straight to lightning traps instead of Wake of Fire to save a respec for the future. The staple early runeword combination of stealth, spirit, and rhyme were strong enough for this stage of the journey, but something much more would be needed to continue on.

    Level 75
    Knowing that the major inflection point of this journey would come at the transition from item grind to full-out level grind, I had to make preparations for collecting the key pieces of equipment that would allow me to get to said inflection point. These key pieces would be found in the famed superchests of Lower Kurast in the form of runes. Additionally, the accompanying crafting materials were also of interest. Without an extended stash, I'd have to craft jewelry as the materials came in, however, crafting +2 class skills amulets were not a possibility until I was a much higher level. This was really the only part of the journey where it hurt not to have extended stash. Lower Kurast would have to wait a bit longer.

    Aside from leveling up, a few convenient items for Lower Kurast were also on the shopping list. Insight and Harmony item bases were scavenged from the Pits while Naj's staff was collected from Pindle. Malah's wand of lower resist gave Izuna just enough damage to take on p8 Pindle comfortably.

    Level 92
    Of course the key pieces were the high runes that would allow me to obtain Enigma, Infinity, Call to Arms, and Heart of the Oak. Enigma was first priority, as it would provide me with greater mobility to search for the remaining runes.
    86 Hours in
    Quite a few Pit stops were needed to find those item bases for our runewords, especially the Infinity base. In the end, I relented and asked Larzuk to socket that ethereal colossus voulge.
    125 Hours in

    Level 94
    The remainder of level 94 was spent testing Chaos Sanctuary runs, in an almost desparate manner to keep the Ancients Quest for level 98. It turns out I could not make CS runs worthwhile, as I had difficulty sniping boss packs in the CS in a timely manner. This is where the auto-aim mechanic of lightning sentry is detrimental. I bit the bullet and completed Ancients at the dawn of level 95 in order to move on to Baal runs.

    Level 95
    The next two levels were completed rather quickly, in hindsight anyways. Between streamlining the Baal running process and the apparent progress in the experience bar, I was eager to get to the next level. An ethereal Death's Web drop by Baal was an extremely nice find in this stretch.
    175 Hours in

    Level 97
    The Baal runs turned into a grind, with the novelty long gone by now. The occasional find motivated me to press forward, culminating with two unique Sacred Armor drops of the green variety. Shortly after, the 2016 Summer MFO began, and it would only make sense for an item drought to coincide. Wonderful. I did reach 98 as a consolation prize.

    Looking back on it all, I have to say that level 97 was the true test of whether or not I would make it to 99. As difficult as level 98 would be, I'd have to say I underestimated level 97 the most. My time spent at level 97 is approximately half that of level 98, so it is certainly not to be taken lightly. The moment I dinged 98, I thought to myself, I have come too far to not see this through to the end.

    Level 98
    The main tactic against Nihlathak was to win the corpse explosion slugfest. Izuna is very tanky with her 4k life pool; CE was not a concern unless cursed or under conviction. The biggest threat were those working as intended Tomb Vipers, with the crazy high DPS output made even deadlier if Nihlathak was cursed or assisting with might or fanaticism. The next collide issue meant teleporting into the poison clouds with a mercenary to be extremely deadly, and Izuna did suffer an early death due to that.

    There were an abundance of S/U drops and a fair amount of high runes in this stretch, not because Nihlathak & Co. were great droppers, but just from the sheer number of runs (~12k) being done.

    1756 out of 11802 total runs were completed with an experience shrine, or ~15%, which is 1 point lower than my initial theorycraft of 16%. I blame cursed Nihlathak! If I subtracted out the extra runs done to compensate for death, the total would be ~11400.

    Epic indeed !!! Very well done. Also really neat statistics. Now I wish I would have kept track of all S/U found as well, but after a while it felt a chore to do so. Those Medieval Mart Grail Pages are definitely awesome for the job though.

    And yes, I agree with you: the difference between getting to 97 and getting to 98 is brutal. More so than I expected. I still see myself getting to 99 at some point, but right now I'm definitely thinking about taking a break from leveling after I hit 98.

    Thanks for the useful information you provided all along. Together with @Pb_pal you really tested the waters for us. I enjoyed reading your updates, so I'll sincerly miss those. It was an honour to be there with you from the start.

    One small thing ...

    This is @Kitteh we are talking about ... the question wasn't innocuous by any means. It was evil, pure evil !!! He just knew we would bite, and wouldn't be able to leave before it's all over ...

    Amazing, simply amazing. I love all the numbers, such as the number of runs, hours, found items etc. Brilliant work! But, fill me in with this Medieval Mart Grail? I've never heard of this. As a life time ATMA/GoMule + Flavie -user, picking up all those Cathan's Seals (I have 90 of them in my stash right now...) is getting a bit annoying and I'll probably end up with around 150 of them at this rate.

    I really need to try an assassin at some point. I've only Mat'd two I think ever (kicksin VERY badly built and a trapsin), but your final run at Nihlathak, hitting 99 made my Hammerdin look like he's not supposed to be even in Hell. That was very impressive and made me want to try Nihla runs with Assassin.

    And I repeat my question from 99 thread, what is your next project? I assume you will not be just mooing around with Izuna, but you'll start some other project? All those HRs should be put to good use for some uncharacteristic builds?

    Great work and thanks for all the input during the whole untwinked 99 thread, I still visit some of your earlier posts to check some numbers you've posted. And I am doing my best to avoid the "level gap" in the thread now, looks bloody awful that there is 3x 99 chars, but no one at 98...

    Btw, rereading @Pb_pal 's 99er thread, what really strikes me is the difference in runes found from Nihl. At level 98, Pb_pal and Nanomist had about the same amount of runes found, but after that ... the difference is amazing (2 Ohm and 2 Ber vs . this crazy amount). The reason most likely is that Nanomist always killed a bunch of enemies when killing Nihl, while Pb_pal only killed a few whenever Nihl spawned CI, otherwise none.

    Makes me think about which route I'll follow myself after 98. I mean, it should go as fast as possible of course, but at the same time I wouldn't mind going a tad slower if that's with a build or target that greatly increases my chances to find HRs, as an incentive to keep on pushing.

    With hoto and spirit i'm not sure if you can call this a proper assassin. Real assassins use dual claws. :p

    Also nice stats. 360 hrs? That's only 9 workweeks. Easy! :D Just for fun i multiplied it by 4 to see how much time i've wasted, which is actually less than expected. Although i'm much slower than you seem to be so it's probably a lot more than 360 times 4.

    Awesome thread. I especially like the timeline-thingy you did, and how every detail is reported, even the total amount of runs. Also grats on those 100 million ar points you have! :D

    @T72on1 I see you are concerned about Nihla's runedrops. To add my experience, I found 7 HRs from him (1 Vex, 1 Lo, 2 Sur, 2 Ber, 1 Jah), and I was rarely killing any other enemy, so I believe @Pb_pal only got the short end of the stick here.

    As for the runes, I do believe I was simply quite unlucky with Nihl. I'm hoping maybe I forgot to keep track of some runes along the way, and that the discrepancy isn't actually that high...

    Nihl has been historically a very good source of runes, so don't let how stingy he was with me deter you!

    Yeah, I looked up your rune drops too :). I even put all the numbers in a table, and plan to add mine and other future 99ers, just to have some baseline as to what one can expect. Maybe I should post it somewhere here. You found quite a lot more than the other two, but given the amount of Travincal runs and the fact that most of your runes dropped there, that's no surprise.

    But yeah, maybe I don't need to worry too much. Then again it made me wonder if one can't be able to pick a Sorc build which does Nihl (almost) as fast as a Blizz(Nova) Sorc, and can kill other monsters there at the same time. Nihl has only 33% fire and lightning resistance, the monsters surrounding him are cold immune, so maybe a light sorc or lightning / fire something can do it just as well. Or even full out fire? Fire ball and Meteor should kill quite some monsters and take out Nihl quick, I'd think.

    Just thinking out loud here.

    Medieval Mart is just an excel spreadsheet made to keep track of all grailers- I think it predates GoMule? A great portion of S/U's will be found during level 98, so decide how you want to approach tracking that S/U count.

    I'm not sure if a kicker build would have been faster for Nihlathak, but I didn't have the gear for it and I wanted to stay trapper all the way. Right now I'm leveling a (twinked) sorc for the upcoming rune find competition. As for the high runes? Build another Infinity in a faster base, Phoenix shield, roll a few Griefs for MF Barb, etc.


    I didn't differentiate which high runes came from what, but I felt half of those high runes came from the monsters around Nihlathak. I also felt my high rune finds were above average, so I'm not sure if it's even better than CS.


    I blame Anya, she hides all the good stuff.


    Well, I did keep a play log, it'd be a shame not to share some of the info!
    Haha, I saw the AR thing too. Not sure what causes that to happen though.

    Congratulations, simply astounding stuff! Also, nice to have some numbers, to get some perspective. Trappers are also great, I just recently switched from Pindle to Baal/Lister with my (very twinked and never-going-to-reach-99) trapper, and while I enjoy it for now, 1675 runs is something else. Not to talk about Nihlathak (who I actually kinda want to run now, because of all you 99ers). Great job!

    In theory i think it could be faster. Kickers excel in taking down a single target fast. I have given it a (very brief) try some years ago and my biggest problem in the actual execution however was to target Nihlathak. It can be quite hard to quickly find and lock on to him in that crowd. So my guess would be that she's only faster in theory. But as i said i haven't tried it extensively so maybe someone can prove me wrong. :)

    Maybe with some extensive use of MB first? Doesn't that knockback as well, and as such seperate the crowd a bit?

    Other than that, yeah, what you said. Kickers are terrific at single targets, but you have to be able to target Nihl of course. Maybe if you wield Stormlash or even Crescent Moon, that is a partial solution? Even if you don't get to target Nihl right away, you still take his life down already.

    Doubt it. For that to work you'd have to kick other targets which means some stuff is gonna die. And as a kicker you won't be blowing up corpses before he is, so i think you'd just be putting yourself in danger with a stormlash or CM. Feel free to try it out though. :D

    Not saying that it will absolutley work. But it might. Kickers have the benefit of leeching life really fast.
