Aristide Resigns & Flees Haiti

He didn't really have much of a choice to begin with. its was either resign or wait till the rebels kill you. But its about time though...

Now its just a matter of ensuring that TRUE democracy does occur. The last thing anyone wants is the same sort of system but with the rebels having the power the Lavalas party did.

I doubt the Haitians will be better off with some of the Rebel commanders in charge, quite a few of them are quite shady individuals.

I guess now the REAL killing will start as the various rebel factions fight it out amongst themselves to see who will control the government.

There are U.S marines headed towards the island which should be there sometime this evening, I don't think the rebels will risk challenging a profesional military, so my bets are that all sides lay low for a bit.

Whether or not they chicken out remains to be seen, but I fear what would happen if yet another conflict would break out. Our nation is obviously not prepared to produce steady goverments as it is.

If anything, the U.S forces should only be an interim force until the French can arrive (they have 2200 troops in the vicinity). Haiti=former French colony, therefore (for some reason) the French are considered responsible.

That is unless the U.S wants to evoke the Monroe Doctrine. ;)

edit: When I first posted in this thread, I had misread the title as "frees" Haiti. My mistake.

I still dont understand what the deal with Haiti is. I know we are sending troops over. But why?

I've heard that there were Marines heading out there to... guard the embassy. Much like they did in Liberia. I haven't heard anything about actual troop movements for peacekeeping activities or anything similar, I may just be out of the loop.

Slightly altered to fit the current situation betterer:

Send The Marines
Tom Lehrer, 1965

What with President [Bush] practicing escalatio on the [Iraqis] and then the [Haitian] crisis on top of that it has been a nervous year and people have begun to feel like a Christian scientist with appendicitis. Fortunately in times of crisis just like this America always has this number one instrument of diplomacy to fall back on. Here's a song about it.

When someone makes a move
Of which we don't approve,
Who is it that always intervenes?
U.N. and O.A.S.,
They have their place, I guess,
But first send the Marines!

We'll send them all we've got,
John Wayne and Randolph Scott,
Remember those exciting fighting scenes?
To the shores of Tripoli,
But not to Mississippoli,

What do we do? We send the Marines!
For might makes right,
And till they've seen the light,
They've got to be protected,
All their rights respected,
'Till somebody we like can be elected.

Members of the corps
All hate the thought of war,
They'd rather kill them off by peaceful means.
Stop calling it aggression,
O we hate that expression.
We only want the world to know
That we support the status quo.
They love us everywhere we go,
So when in doubt,
Send the Marines!

Not wanting to be inflammatory, but there is Somalia to give the lie to that somewhat.

I get the feeling that the areas which the marines are will be nice an quiet. Go more than 100 yards from there and your life expectancy will be drastically reduced.

Here's hoping that Haiti's stability returns soon, with a government that the people will not be so ready to raise arms against.

what would the french do exactly? shall we review the french military/peacekeeping history?
Haiti=former French colony, therefore (for some reason) the French are considered responsible.
Don't worry, the last thing i consider the french Govt is responsible.
