Are there any "real" newb guides out there?

I just jumped back into the game after a roughly 2 year absense. I've gone straight back to the necro just like I did when D2 first came out. As with any game like this...things change quite a bit when you aren't around. To me this means old builds are obsolete and that there is a ton of lingo and items I have never heard of. I looked at a few different guides and I like the look of the poisonmancer, but I am holding back. Unfortunately, every guide I look at says you need to go get a two mile long list of items. This means I either need to have these hoarded away already (I doubt Blizzard is going to hand me a nice "welcome back" present) or I need to spend a handful of RL cash to get a good character going. Personally, I don't like the thought of buying in-game items with anything other than in-game money. Are there any real newb guides/builds left out there? Or atleast anyone who remembers what it was like to start fresh? I'm lost here

welcome! ill let MM do the formal welcome

as for "n00b" builds, the skellimancer is in my opinion the cheapest one. u have no real need for elite items, though they help;)

sorcs are also relatively cheap as well, though in hell, the immunes are annoying

Blizzard might be trying to support the Ebayers and Websites scamming people for real money, but I found that pgems can get me a lot of godly gear --- my stuff on the last ladder, most of my stuff this ladder, and if I'm still around on the next ladder...

i think that you should just make a mf scorc use that guy to find sum items then do sum casual trading 4 ur necro or if u got a friend who still plays ask him 4 sum old gear lol

SKELEMANCER (fishymancer) ALL THE WAY!!!

I'd go with what myrakh said. I started ladder with nothing collected gems lvled collected more gems traded around and eventually wound up with a full trang summoner at lvl 89. Of course this was old ladder but i did the same on the new ladder and it worked great. Once you get high enough (75ish) pits are pretty easy for a skelemancer to handle.

Hope this helps and if your on west ladder i may be able to spare a few things...(accnt is same as sn)

Welcome Newcomer to The Darkness. Grab a brew :drink: and feel free to raise some corpses.

Most of us remember how it is like when you start out fresh. As said before a Skelliemancer is a good way to start.

However most of the builds in the stickied guides also perform very well if you do not have the listed gear. The killing will be slightly more slower and you might find yourself needing some help from a party at some occasions, but overall these builds perform very nicely.

If you really feel you need gear, you can always drop by the Item Fund for Necro Forum Members and see if they have some gear for you. If you ask nicely in this thread I am sure a lot of the regulars are willing to give you some stuff to start out with.

thank you gents

Thanks for the advice guys. Coincidently, I had made a last minute switch to a skelemancer and am enjoying it so far. I got up to lvl 15 and schooled Andy with a handful of skels, something I was never able to do back in the day. Big changes to summons?

Ran into a generous barb who handed me a +3 SM +1 RS wand, so that's helping nicely. Working on pgems also, although I don't have any idea what the economy is like with those. Is there a chart or page somewhere that lists "this pgem is worth this much"?

Patch 1.10 made Skellies very powerful. Mages are also very viable, but a bit more fragile. Revives lack a bit because of their inherent idiotic AI. Golems are only useable as Tanks (with Clay being the best), however an IG form a good CtC item or with a lot of CB can do some damage to a boss (and can be made elementally immune very easily).

Prices on trade items are always difficult and since they can change a lot there are no fixed prices. It depends on what you want to loose, how bad you need the item and what the other person wants.

Try the trade forums. Many rich folks who has been playing for a long time might offer some nice stuff for little pgems, so its not that hard to get nice stuff around here
And gl with your new nec, l8r :howdy:

I am not agree. I have mages maxed and about 10 in revive . They REALLY help. Just dont wait them to follow you - revive EVERYTHING ! With Decrep and CE they very effective. Also they make impossible to get to you almost any monster , since they become overcrouded . They only problem still burning souls and such  , but it not really hard to get 75% lightning res (its only positive resistance on my necro  ).

About golem . I use fire golem because he have huge amount of life (about 4.5k)and immunity to fire. I find it usefull.

P.S. Forgive me my bad english plz.

Don’t get me wrong, Revives aren’t bad summons. They still do what they do very well, but when you compare them to Skellies for overall easy the Revives are lacking. If you have only a few points to spend on minions, then Revives would be my choice.

When using revives as meat shields, the ai isnt important since u can revive monsters around you.
But problem with that is if youd like to keep lets say the frenzytaurs or doom knights, cus they can do some dmg, then their ai becomes a problem because theyll just get lost/left behind and vanish.
However, enigma can take care of that problem ;)

except when u dont have enigma...

which leads me to another point, invest in charges of tele on switch...whenever u use up the charges, throw it out;)
