Are cars getting too powerful?

Latest cars I've been researching to replace my Honda. All 2009 or later models:

Nissan Maxima 290hp
Hyundai Genesis 310 hp
Acura TL 305hp

The power is stock and naturally aspirated (non-turbos). They're stronger than the past Corvettes. The interior on these cars is top notch material, fit and finish, and just feels expensive.

Pretty soon cars will make 300hp the norm and will be pushing 400hp cars. How much is enough...

People will always want their things to be either bigger/more powerfull/etc...

Personally, I don't understand why they make cars that can go 200 or more km/h, when the maximum speed on the highway here is 120...

(I'm guessing it's the same in other countries, every car can easily exceed the speed limits in every country)

Manual driving like 19th century Japan with servants pushing wheeleed chairots ftw? I don't think you can never get enough after you have tried F-14. 2280km/h compared to a car... What a joke!

Speed limits are local. You can drive as fast as you like on private courses.

the HP also effects acceleration.

Heck my car is an ** station wagon with 114 HP and I can still do 220 km/h with that one. When I get a new car it's for added comfort and cargo space.

Unfortunately private courses are only open once a year where I live :(
Also, they're all pretty far off from where I live.
And if your car get's damaged, it's all for you, since it's not a public road.

I do drive a lot faster than is allowed on the roads, but we got somuch "flashpoints" that you have to be extremely cautious here.

Well you're looking at some pretty decent cars, DZ. There's always things like the Smart Fortwo, the Honda Fit, Toyota Matrix, etc. that have a lot less power.

I think I heard of a four door Ford with 350hp, but I can't remember which it was. I want to say the Taurus, but I know they retired that model, so I'm sort of stuck.

$5800 for a carbureted engine with cast iron heads? Screw that. I'm getting mine at Ford Racing.

The Magnum SRT, Pontiac G6 (one with Corvette engine), Chrysler 300 Hemi, Cadillac STS-V all produce 350 or more hp.

But they're all junk cuz they don't last.

The faster a car is, the less reliable. You could always get a bulletproof Volkswagon (old) Beetle, but you're looking at 50 horsepower.

Heh, welcome to the 1960's ... when muscle cars ruled the day.
Damned straight! My best bud's ride was a 1969 Plymouth Road Runner. A 6 BBL, 440 HP monster that could lay rubber in all four gears. I've heard that a top quality restored version goes for over $100,000.

Isn't the market increasingly dominated by little Japanese economy cars? And has been since the 80s?

Depends on how you rate HP. In the early 70's HP ratings changed and basically what you call muscle cars doesn't have all that 400+hp as the companies claimed. If you rate those engines to today's standards, they'll be considered underachievers.

Yes---I've had muscle cars, they can spin tires, gives out lots of smokes, loud, but aren't faster than the family sedans I've mentioned above.

Too much power? I'll keep my 5.7L Hemi. Thank you very much.

It's the G8. I'd own a G8 or the STS-V. Both are freakin sweet AND pretty darned reliable.

Ya'll may be forgetting that all the added weight of these cars almost compensates for the increase in hp/torque in lots of cases (but not all ofc). With the addition of all the safety features and luxury amenities that most of us have come to expect with our cars, trucks, vans, etc, comes more weight too.

I personally enjoy tracks with turns (autocrossing) vs. the straight line stuff (drags). In my case handling > power.

In the '60s and '70s, cars were underrated anyway so people wouldn't be killed by insurance costs. And a Superbird would destroy those cars you mentioned above. I don't think you realize just how fast those cars were. Although, by 440 , I'm assuming he meant the engine, which certainly wasn't as powerful as the 426.

Granted, there were some slow muscle cars back in the day, but the Superbird was one of the fastest out of a lot of fast cars.
