Archivist = Cain - not such a stinky idea after all?

Archivist = Cain - not such a stinky idea after all?

As a playable class, the Archivist would mostly stink (come on be honest, he looked kinda cool in a pathetic way). HOWEVER, just think back to the "extra" barbarians that would independently move around the Frigid Highlands in Act5 of 2-LOD, and would also attack nearby monsters. They weren't so bad, hey? Then you'd have a couple of them inside Harrogath, just hanging out, almost like NPC's.

Then flash forward to D3's long gameplay vid, halfway through, right after the Barbarian enlists the services of the two mercs, and Deckard Cain following after them. After the mercs have the smackdown laid on em, and our hero reaches the Thousant Pounder, you'll notice that Deckard Cain still moves around just fine on his own, regularly cowering away when the Pounder gets too close for comfort.

When the Archivist was "revealed" I thought "why not give Cain some basic attack skills while he's out of a town, away from his comfort zone?". Exactly like a mercenary. While in town they wouldn't attack and they would remain close by until you leave town again, and they'd resume their role. Same with Cain, and then I thought "why not make him BE something like the Archivist while he's in the battlefield?".
He should be susceptible to enemy attacks, as well as feeling free to blast anyone that gets too close with a questbolt or a lorenado lol, and if things get way too hairy and our hero or himself is near death, and there's no way he'll make it, then have the old fart lay waste to everything in sight with a deciding SHUSH (now that one was damn cool). Of course when you restart the game he'd have to automatically reappear, because we'd need him around to carry on his NPC duties when he is returned to town ".....Leah worries after you".
Isn't that what happens with those "stranded barbarians in need of rescuing"? If one or two die and you restart the game, they're alive again, giving you a chance to complete the quest?

So why not?:scratchchin:

"the writings in this place are incredible!!" There's no telling how long Cain has been down there, and considering all the books he's skimmed through, there's bound to be something to teach him how to use magic, or at least remind him of it, he IS the last living HORADRIM after all.

I mean, yeah, he's mildly useful, identifies stuff and gives you quest info, but when you boil it all down, that's all he's good for, until you learn the game by heart and skip ahead to the quest area without consulting him, then he becomes downright useless. Need I mention identify scrolls/tomes? Why not make him REALLY useful and actually DO something while he's following your lead?

Nice idea. But what I really hope for is recruitable archivists, like mercs (done properly, without the silly spells and such). Because when it comes to the end of it, old sages are cool.

(When reading about the archivist for the first time, I was thinking that it is obviously a joke, but at the same time hoping it wasn't...)

I would liketo say that the whole Archivist idea is stupid, and it wont suite the game at all, especially with those silly skills and looks.

Cain could wait for you in town like always, but remember those Lore books Baishok talked about a while ago? The lore books will drop from monsters and have some things written in them according to the area they are found in. I wish we could bring these books to Cain and he would read them for us... That would be nice, he could add a few things he and there from his own knowledge...
