    Archery!

Hey, a thousand greetings to you all.

Ive recently took an interest in Archery.

A book piqued my interest, it was called "Dies the Fire" and "The Protecters War" by Blah Blah.

It was about a storm that caused gunpowder not to ignite and gasoline and coal inflammable. Basically, the world was thrown back a millenium. Well, a band of unruly heroes take up bows and defeat a wouldbe crackpot warlord...yadda yadda yadda, but his detail of bows made me go OMG!

So in hence, Ive been wanting to start shooting bows and pointy sticks at targets and stuffness.

Any tips? Is it hard to pick up? Is it fun? Will it be useful if the world is sent back to the dark ages????

    Many thanks ahead of time.

It's fun. It requires physical strength and skill. It has practical uses in hunting and it's cool.

I only did archery a few times in high school, but from what I've heard.. get a wrist guard.

    Re: Archery!

    Or use proper style.

I've been shooting a bow for half my life. Alas I suffer from target panic (that is to say, my subconcious prevents me from aiming without an instant release...); something I've suffered from for years and hope to work on overcoming this summer.

I don't do it nearly as much as I'd like. UM, large as it is, does not have any archery facilities.

It's fun until people bug me about the target panic crap. I'd work on remedying it, but I don't have the time to commit to it, usually.

Don't ever release the bowstring without an arrow. I made that mistake once. This is why you need a wrist-guard. The biggest bruise I have ever had, from my elbow to my wrist...

Screw your arm; dry-firing is bad for the bow.

    Re: Archery!

Well considering I live in the backwoods of Pennsylvania, Ive got plenty of open space around me. Thought of making a small target range on the side of a hill...so I dont lose my arrows..

I can feel the amount of thought you put into that.

    Simply Amazing, Much Love.

    Valid point.

But if you share the specified quota of love, you will not be a hippie.

    Fair?

    Re: Archery!

Getting whacked with the string really doesn't hurt that much, I always take off those crappy armguards.

It's fun, I would've liked to keep it up but I never found the time or nearby facilities.

    Re: Archery!

I take it you've never fired a real bow then? They can leave a really nasty bruise and I've seen a few that have bled.

Archery is fun if you have a place you can shoot, if you have a Cabela's or something around they might offer lessons.

    Re: Archery!

when I was 10 years old my "father" (lose term) taught me how to make a bow Took me a whole day to carve that wood right but it became a really good bow even though it was nearly as tall as I was. Then he taught me what tree made good arrows and to keep the bow submerged in water when not using it. I got really good at fireing that bow. Plus I made it so I liked it even more.

yeah archery sure is fun, most of the time. it can be frustrating sometimes when you can't seem to get concentrated and there's no grouping whatsoever

    Re: Archery!

You mean one of those massive things that cost half a million dollars and look more like the rigging from a galleon than a bow? No, I mostly just used your usual cheap archery range bows. I think those modern ones are kind of cheating really.

Hardly ever hit my arm anyway, I think you have to hold it wrong to do that. Or you just have fat arms.

    Re: Archery!

any bow >25 lbs can leave a nasty bruise if you hit your arm. of course you need to hold your arm wrong to hit your arm anyway. but especially when youre just beginning it can be hard not to do that (reason why theres full arm protection for beginners)

Screw Cabela's. Find a local sportsman's club. (though usually the learning opportunities are for kids...)
