Anyone used hi-speed satellite intenet?

Looks like we are going to be buying a house on the lake. Dock, waterskiing, fishing and all that. Only one down side, doesn't look like dsl or hi-speed cable is available yet. I can do the direcway from directv, which gives me hi speed downloads but 56 k on the request side. I realize that most of the flow is downhill, but have some concerns about the uplink side. Has anyone ever used satellite internet delivery that can tell me your practical experiences?

Dont even try to play games over the internet, the 56k is horrid for that. Regular browsing and downloading will of course be enhanced. I believe weather can also affect it more than wired connections.

I play LOD on 56K and it's perfect, this is a game that does not need much bandwidth, only thing that you need is a good provider with a stabile connection, with no up’s and downs. Don’t run any program while playing LOD or do any download in the background, my friend plays LOD on B.net via 33k!!!
Playing games via satellite is not a good option (any game); because you send messages/instructions/commands through a normal phone connection and you receive responds from the satellite. Obviously this signal has to “travel†thousands of miles until he reaches the target: your satellite dish, and there is no way that these to tasks could be synchronized. And as a final result you will always have lag. More action in the game => more lag (say Counter Strike). It’s a matter of milliseconds.
These milliseconds of de-synchronization are not that important for a normal surf or download (you will not notice that much), but it’s essential for playing games were inputs and outputs have to be momentarily (commands and responds). Though you guys in America could have an advanced satellite system and might have solved this problem, but …

Sorry for any spell mistakes.

ps: yes playing any other game that needs much bandwidth (mostly 3D games), is not possible via 56k.

vdzele, i'm sorry but you are not exactly correct here.

It's been established that some wireless satellite connections are blazing fast, the only problem with them is packet loss.

I've used a wireless satellite once, it's very fast indeed but it's a little faulty and unstable at times.

I did NOT say that satellite conections are not slow (fast download that is), I know they are fast, I was talking about:
- sending signals/commands/messages from your PC to the provider (normal phone connection).
- and then recieving responds from the sattelite.
- between sending and receiving thier is a desynch that cuzes lag. (this "efect" goes for any wireless connections)
- as far as I know you could send signals with your dish, but that is too expensive and only large companies can afford that (or you are a millioner, but then it's a better solution that you buy Blizz-North and you have real online gaming  ).
- did you play any game this way?

happy 16 :howdy:
