Any French or Germans in the forum?

I'd like to thank France and Germany for the Christmas gifts I was given yesterday.

1. one bottle of Courvoisier from my girlfriend
2. one bottle of Lucid absinthe from my girlfriend (I've been mixing it with sugar and water, any recommendations?)
3. two bottles of Augsburger Christkindlmarkt Gluehwein from my father.

You have to warm up the Glühwein (AFAIK it must not boil), it tastes better then and you also get more drunk and puke more severely when applying greater amounts of it. Regarding Absinth, I never tried that, but I heard that the additional stuff in it is negligible in comparison to the alcohol, but sniffing it up your nose probably intensifies its effect, just as with any other booze...

Courvoisier ? That's a Cognac, correct ? It's drunk our of big, round glasses, so it develops its full flavor. However, I'm a Cognac noob, I probably cannot distinguish it from €5 brandy.

I cannot help you beyond that. With respect to alcoholics I'm only drinking beer and occasionally a glass of whisky (preferably single malt Scotch) and when hanging around with the right guys, Jägermeister (tastes like cough sip and therefore it's medicine, so the more you drink, the better for your health).

I just did Johnny the favour of replying what he was expecting me to write.

And yes, it's better if the analogy goes to nowhere.

As fo absinth:
Warm a glass of it, add a spoon of caramel and some maple syrup.
Or just mix it with redbull, a shot per one can.

The second option is not so tasty and damges your liver more but it certainly raises your party-factor :)

Krischan:

No boiling is what I was told. I'm going up to Austin for the new year; maybe I'll take some of it with me.

Yep, I was drinking the cognac out of the glasses (for the absinthe) she gave me. They're not brandy snifters, but they're fairly large - more like a really thick wine glass though. It's all gone now. We had about 10 people over to our house for dinner on the 25th, and one of her friends mulled some wine. I donated some Courvoisier to the first batch. Good stuff.

I like the absinthe. I think that the other ingredients only have an effect if you drink large quantities, but you'd be really drunk anyway, so you might not really notice. I like the flavor, but it is pretty expensive. I'm sure I'll get some more eventually, but not anytime soon.

I usually drink beer, but only because it's cheap (american beer) and effective. If I've got some money to spare, it's usually Jack Daniel's Green Label. I also like Gin and Tonic, but good gin is pretty pricey too.

BRKO:

Thanks for the absinthe idea, though it's almost gone now. I don't have caramel, but I do have maple syrup. She also gave me two glasses, two slotted spoons and a sugar bowl, so I intend to buy some more eventually. I'll try the caramel/maple next time I get some.

I'll have to try it with redbull, too.

Snorting alcohol: I get nose bleeds in dry weather, so I think that would be bad idea for me. Yeah, I'm just not going to do that.

EDIT:

Last glass o' absinthe.:weep:

I may buy some for spring break. I'm starting a new second job in mid January, so I'll have the money for it. I'm going to start teaching at a community college.

Since you asked : I speak German, but am Austrian.I live in Namibia, probably the only country in Africa that is not yet totally screwed up. There are a lot of Germans here, they keep things running.
We even have a brewery here that is run by german brewmasters. Namibia Breweries makes beer according to the 'Reinheitsgebot' ,which allows only barley, hops and water.Try a Windhoek Lager if you can get one somwhere.

There is just one way to drink absinth. Water it down with laudanum and then drink it. :whistling:

The Reinheitsgebot of 1536 was very restrictive since people didn't understand how fermentation took place. At the time, yeast in the air caused the fermentation process.

The modern law is a bit longer than the old one and allows yeast, as Krischan said. It also allows a large number of other things and provides a way for getting other ingredients approved.

Why even bother with the absinthe then? :D
