Any blacksmiths around here?

Any blacksmiths around here?

I've justed a bit myself.

I've been pouding out my first set of tools: center punch, chisel and chipping hammer. It's really a neat feeling turning a piece of junk metal into something useable and of high quality all by yourself.

It's too bad the work is pretty much a niche thing or a hobby. Still, it's important to know this because building your own tools is really important in the metal work and fabrication industry.

I've only made nails and horseshoes the old school way. If you really enjoy it though, you may like the metallurgy field.

Fire needs fuel and oxygen, so air will work better while propane would extinguish the flames because there would be even less oxygen within the furnace then. Also, solid fuel like coal will transfer heat to the metal with less losses and at a higher transfer rate while a lot of heat will be wasted when trying to melt iron with a flame (i.e. hot gas). You can surely melt anything with an acetylen/oxygen flame, but at a low efficiency.

However, if you want to blow up your smithy, filling it with propane in such a manner will probably work better.

That's why I haven't added a smiley. They just soften up points anyway, I should give them up completely in the OTF.

AFAIK sauerkraut (pickled cabbage, for the others) is a rather common Swedish dish as well. Swedish and German cuisine might have more common elements than you might want to admit to.

A friend of mine insists it's really a Czech dish

Don't kill yourself ok?
Not yet. I'm only 20 years old. Give me another 20, at most.

Thanks for this. I was just thinking about building one of these.

Though, I think I'll grab one of the older style blowers instead of an electric one. Hand cranking seems to have more control than a vacuum blowing out however much it can.

Now... Just need an anvil to go with it. I bet I can make one of those!

I'm actually working on my welding certification.
