... and you thought 'Ben Dover' was a funny name ?

Hi all,

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1164906/Lumbered-boring-Thank-lucky-stars-werent-born-Anice-Bottom-Kitty-Litter-Golden-Balls.html

An amusing article about some of the weirder, funnier, quirky names people have been given over the years.

In 2005, Jackaman, an archivist at the Cornwall Record Office, produced a silly names list, gleaned from her files, which included such names as Philadelphia Bunnyface, Boadicea Basher and Ostrich Pockinghorn. Cobbledick, a surname from my wife's ancestry, was included.
So take a bow, please, Teddy Bear, Edwin Quack, Nellie Smellie, Norman Conquest, Frou-Frou Mallet and Oswald Beagle Pratt among many, many others - all of them, I assure you, entirely real individuals from times past whose names have been recorded for posterity in official documents.
most women would prefer not to marry if it meant thereby acquiring an embarrassing alternative from a putative husband (an honourable exception might be made, here, for Mary Madcap, who in 1782 married John Bastard), and thus quirky names have died out over time.
What were their parents thinking? (A superfluous question in the case of Lewis Unexpected Smith, Not Wanted James Colvill and Final Eldridge, all of whom I have encountered in my research.)

I knew a girl in primary school called Sarah Money (pronounced moan-ey). These are a tad worse than that though.

Norman Conquest is an awesome name.

Ok Sandcat,

How about ....

Nor is this exclusively a historical phenomenon. While the bulk of the oddities I found come from centuries past, Radar Oo, Princess Diana Frempong, Phoenix Claw Unicorn and Icicle Star Crumplin all date from the 21st century.

Knew a guy named Lester Haire (les hair) - He had a son and named him...... Peter (poor kid). My buddy asked Les why he didn't name him "Pubic"-

Also knew Richard Weed - but you'd never call him "Dick" - ex marine; State Patrol Officer - the classic huge guy with mirrored glasses you see in the movies! (he's probably retired by now)

How the **** did "Dick" ever become the short form of Richard?

Peter File would be worst. I really like the "Not Wanted James Colvill" one, not exactly subtle!

Dick may be from rhyming slang with Ric-, the usage as a term for penis is relatively recent. I knew a guy we called Dicky.

I remeber a local radio show doing prank calls and the person they called was Richard Handler. His wife answered. I guess they did find a handler after all. She was not happy.

Many names in the US actually are derived from German, such as Rothschild ( red shield),Schwarzschild (black shield) ,Katzenellenbogen ( cats elbow), Spielberg (play mountain),Kirshenbaum (cherry tree) and so on.Some are really funny.
Also amusing is Nominative Determinism where the guy's name relates to his job,eg Ed Roper ,Hangman.Or Wolfgang Wolf , manager of Wolfsburg F.C.There is a lot of the stuff on the web.

What's with all the names that end with berg? A lot of them don't even have anything to do with mountains in the first place.

Re: ... and you thought 'Ben Dover' was a funny name ?

Its just an old and traditional norwegian name, like '-sen' (or the swedish '-son')

No those make sense.

If your father was named Sven your sons name would be Svenson as in Svens Son.

Meanwhile the berg suffix never has anything to do with the prefix.

My favourite all-time odd name, which I have come across during the course of my career, is "Mrs Stella Banana Stimson-Brown".

No, I have no idea why.

That is all.
