And on the 10th day god said... Let there be Johnny's computer and so there was.

After 10 days in the workshop my computer is finaly completed. Upgraded to supremeness.

    Pics:

The graphics cards where the hardest. The final result for optimal performance and for stability is one double card called "PowerColor ATI HD3870 X2 1024MB PCIe" And one single card called "Gigabyte Radeon HD3870 512MB PCIe 2.0"

The end result is like running 3 cards at the same time but through crossfire the "Gigabyte Radeon HD3870 512MB PCIe 2.0" card can be switched off at the push of a button as some games do not support running 3 cards at the same time.

    PowerColor ATI HD3870 X2 1024MB PCIe
    Gigabyte Radeon HD3870 512MB PCIe 2.0
    Memory: 4 x x 1GB Corsair 1600 mhz
    Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 2.66GHz 1333MHz 12 MB Cache
    Motherboard: Gigabyte [email protected] F6b
    Soundcard: Creative XFi Platinum
    Powersource: 750 watt Corsair
    Harddrive: 250 GB Hitachi SATA
    Cooling: Noctua NH-U12P
The price: $2500 (down from $4000)

The processor when running att full capacity becomes 22 degrees celcius warm (71 F) which means that if my fridge ever breaks then I can store my milk inside the computer.

The middle fan is the processor fan.

Lol, I'm assuming you didn't pay $2500 just to store your milk in it?

So does this mean it would cost me £1250 in England due to exchange rates?

    On low graphics maybe.

Why did you go for a sound card? Your motherboard has nice audio built in already.

$2500 is much more realistic than the original $4000, why the drop though? I'm surprised you didn't go with a velociraptor though, your hard drive is(as expected) the slowest thing on there by quite a bit.

That's indeed odd : Why didnt you go with the quicker raptors in an already expensive system?

The soundcard and harddrive are both original parts from the computer and quite good for today aswell.

The drop in price is because they switched some expensive parts for some more efficient parts. The processor for example was switched from one that was faster but only had half the cache. The graphic card solution is a pretty uniqe one which works better than using two really expensive cards. I also got a severe discount on the work because I had to wait so long.

I did ask them to get a new harddrive aswell but they adviced against it because it would'nt make any difference.

I'm surprised with just air cooling your temperatures are so low.

Temps on the vid cards at max power and idle temp?

Do PCIE videocards still consume a portion of addressable system memory, or is that a thing of the past/32 bit OSes? (As in, I thought it used to be the case that if you had a 1 GB vid card, the max RAM you could use was 3 GB.)

And yeah, most CPUs I've seen idle at higher than that. Nice.

On XP I was limited to 3 GB but Vista easaly allows 4 GB of ram.

That limitation was just because of Windows/32-bit stuff, I don't think PCIe had anything to do with it. Graphics Cards have their own dedicated memory, they don't touch system RAM unless it is integrated.

EDIT: That is 3gigs per application, not total.

Hmm, I know they have their own dedicated memory, but what I'm recalling is...this, I think. http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000811.html

    And another: http://www.dansdata.com/askdan00015.htm
So for a 1 GB card, I think it would (or used to) need 1GB of address space to interface with the system, removing that from what's available for RAM.

Again, not sure if this affects all systems anymore.

Maybe he has to take milk out of his fridge and put it cold in his computer every half hour to get those temperatures. Maybe that is where the milk comes into the equation.

I'm going to ask around about that tomorrow, several of my teachers are hardware design guys. PCIe though is an entirely different system(from PCI) for moving data around, so I don't know if that would have an effect.

But going over 4 gigs on a 32-bit system is tricky business, so unless Johnny got 64-Bit Vista then he would be taking a huge speed hit for accessing that RAM.
