I realized while rolling an AT map for a new Sorc today that I really don't have a handle on what monster density to shoot for. (Density meaning number of monsters per run.) Density seems much more important in AT because most maps are easily run in a circular fashion and rather close to the waypoint.
So I took a map that seemed good and did 50 runs. The mean number of bosspacks was 5.22 (SD 1.94), the mean number of champions was 3.5 (SD 2.53) (not counting by pack since they vary from 1-4). Twice I had runs with 9 bosspacks, which I didn't even know was possible on AT. Sadly I also had two runs with 3 bosspacks and 4 champions.
How does this compare to a good AT map? I've seen people throw around numbers like 5.5, I'm not sure if that includes champions. Then again, champions drop so poorly.
