Ancient Tunnels Monster Density

I realized while rolling an AT map for a new Sorc today that I really don't have a handle on what monster density to shoot for. (Density meaning number of monsters per run.) Density seems much more important in AT because most maps are easily run in a circular fashion and rather close to the waypoint.

So I took a map that seemed good and did 50 runs. The mean number of bosspacks was 5.22 (SD 1.94), the mean number of champions was 3.5 (SD 2.53) (not counting by pack since they vary from 1-4). Twice I had runs with 9 bosspacks, which I didn't even know was possible on AT. Sadly I also had two runs with 3 bosspacks and 4 champions.

How does this compare to a good AT map? I've seen people throw around numbers like 5.5, I'm not sure if that includes champions. Then again, champions drop so poorly.

Doh, I totally forgot that people counted bosspacks there too. So I see 5.62, 5.26, 6.05 at the top. According to the directions champions are counted by groups, although I don't know how well people followed the directions (especially at those speeds!). In any case slightly different from how I counted. But if you sum my bosspacks with my champion packs, and even if you think most champion packs are 4 in size (which I think is incorrect, I'd say it's more like 3), that would suggest that my map is actually fine - or even above average. Those avg times are out of control. Maps are actually probably much smaller than mine.

Here is nice vid of Nagi-master. Counting champion and bosspacks is easy. Problematic is when you have multiple champions pack at one piece, or with some bosspacks as well, but those are problematic to count even if you play very very slow.

Anything above 5.2 bosspacks seems like a good map, depending on the size. Champion packs vary from 2-4, and it's really good to count each champion pack as one bosspack since they spawn at same locations as bosspacks do. Chance to drop items are slightly different, but considering all that is too complicated. Simply count each champion pack as one bosspack, very simple and accurate enough.
