i do think its funny that they say its based on a true story but from what i knew the story was made up by an author who paid a family to say all this happened. then he wrote a book and then a first movies came out. So i'm still running off the 'its all fake so ill poo poo it' track in my mind.

I watched both the original Amityville and Amityville II last fall, and honestly l thought they were just cheesy.

The whole incest thing in the second one was kinda disturbing though. Gross too. :cheesy:

Spoiler?

GATE TO HELL IN SOMEBODY'S BASEMENT isn't true? Weird, I could have sworn it was true.

I've heard the name, but never seen any of these, so I suppose I don't find them worth watching to start with.

Not sure whether there is a difference with boys/girls (do male responses to females apply to children as well?), but humans in general are "programmed" to respond positively to children --- the whole thing about "cute babies" and such is really a firmware subroutine in our brains :)

So I would assume that using children as monsters somehow messes with the whole "positive response" thing

I quite liked the book. Only thing I can remember from the movie (old version) is the scary window thing the house had going. I'll prolly rent the new version when it comes out on DVD.

The only "true" part of the whole story is the DeFeo murders. Ronald DeFeo Jr's defense at his trial revolved around possession - thus setting up a great 'backstory' for the whole Lutz debaucle that followed.

An uncle of mine used to pass the real house on Ocean Avenue every day on his commute to work. It was renovated a long time ago and if I remember correctly, the creepy windows were removed.

Children AS monsters? Children ARE monsters! :D

I saw the original and frankly, I wasn't impressed (nor scared, for that matter). This new one looks like the same old movie with more effects and less acting so I'm giving it a pass.

I want to see it just b/c im a horror movie nut. I love horror movies, cheesy or not. You either get a good laugh or a good scare and I'm always in for both.

Either A&E or Court TV did a nice expose on the house and the murders. The subsequent haunting wasn't addressed...probably because it was a hoax.

As far as a fiction movie goes..it scares me.

Snopes posted someone's writeup on the whole thing:

http://www.snopes.com/horrors/ghosts/amityville.asp

And of course, their conclusion is that it's not true. Then again, can't any movie be based on real events? Someone really had to cook up the idea and write the script. It's such a loose term, it can be molded to fit just about anything. Sorta like a horoscope.

Sometimes you feel misunderstood.

Ive seen em both. First one was good, and moderately scary. Second one sucked, and was a waste of money.

I suspect it has something to do with a certain OTFer's avatars...Think yourself lucky if you missed the girl in the red dress...

BTW, in reference to another thread, the blonde girl that plays the wife (I think, havn't seen it yet...she's also in Alias..can't think of her name) is an Australian actress.

Speaking of which, I wonder who plays Laura DiDio? The crappy reporter who hyped up the "investigation"? Now a "respected" tech journalist who writes many pro-Microsoft shill pieces.

If you really want to be scared, Google for her picture... Tammy Faye ain't got nuthin' on Laura!
