Amazing Eth Poleaxe?

Does anyone remember the amazing poleaxe that was posted here a few years ago? It was an eth rare with a zod and two ruby jewels of alacrity. I'm now thinking that maybe it was a reaper's roll.

Anyone?

Now that I'm worried that it's a unique: the main argument I was making on the D3 community forum was that rares played a big role in the D2 item meta-game. Does anyone have a rare item that rivals uniques in D2?

My main idea was that rares were a big factor in late-game D2. Whether I'm right or wrong, your insight on D2 might inform the other discussion on D3.

Thanks!

rares have 2 sockets max, if it had 3 sockets (2 jewels + zod) that sounds a lot like an eth tomb reaver to me

You're most likely thinking of an eth Tomb Reaver socketed with Zod and two Ruby Jewels of Fervor, which is indeed a pretty neat and rare (though not Rare) weapon.

ETA: Generally speaking, rares aren't that important in (legit) d2, at least when it comes to weapons. There certainly are exceptions though (especially when duping/hacking/bnetting), and for other item slots, rares are often quite useful.

Yeah, both jewels and the base were perfect. :D

Always going untwinked has many perks (@Fabian: yes, I use rare weapons often. During most of Nightmare, my merc weapon is very often a gambled + upgraded rare. One of my endgame rogue mercs has used an imbued bow, etc.) but also a couple of obvious drawbacks.
For example, it's a bit depressing that I have never seen a Tomb Reaver of any kind.

Rares are end game items in classic. Which is what makes classic the ONLY way to play on realms (for me atleast)

I'm probably missing the point a bit, but showing incredible D2 rares doesn't mean that rares are playing a big role in D2. There are no rares which are so much better that it makes up enough of a difference to the taste of the typical D2 player. That's probably a bit different in classic, however.

Furtherly, what's the usual way of obtaining an incredible rare? Certainly not MFing it yourself or by aschieving something like a 6 on 10 die rolls in a row. You usually trade it from somebody. Assuming that somebody else was lucky is often just an excuse to push away concerns of that item being botted, duped or (in particular on SP) hacked. The chance to get your hands on a truly legit one-in-50-million item is like the chance that one of your friends has won the jackpot in the lottery.

I'm not going to express my lack of expectations regarding D3 here. Perhaps I'm just too pessimistic and BTW, this is a thread in a D2 forum :)

Given the people I have played with here over the last 8 (!) years, I have a high degree of confidence that the majority of the godly rates shown in the IFT are legit. Many are not that perfect, there is often a hidden flaw. OMG's Skull Breaker for example does not complete with rune words. In practice the durability loss does not keep up with the self repair. And Death out damages it if you don't need the IAS.

I have personally found a few godly rares in my time, I know others have too. And if you look at the rates in the IFT, they are often not of BNet perfection levels.

Where rares shine:
- Jewelery, particularly rings with FCR
- Wind Druid Pelts
- Resistance boots
- Assassin Claws

Where rares suck (for twinked play):
- Weapons
- Armour
- Gloves (not crafts though)

Thanks for the replies.

My main point in the other thread* was that rares play a role in D2X even in late-game, but also that for some slots, rares can compete with uniques and runewords. I was thinking that there were two ways this happened: 1) rares are often very good for non-unique stats in some slots, e.g. rings/amulets, and 2) that rares have the potential with good rolls to beat even uniques and runewords. I had a vague memory of that Tomb Reaver, but I recalled it being a rare. I soon remembered that rares can't get 3 sockets, so I became unsure of which part of what I remembered was incorrect.

Thanks for clearing it up for me.

I intended to show a rare with very good rolls as one part of claiming that rares played a role.
