    Allergic to Wi-Fi

This is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. I'm just left speechless...

Hmm, I just looked the guy up on Wikipedia:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Firstenberg

Looks like he's been leading the crusade for quite some time.

Man, he has been using this "electromagnetic hypersensitivity" on his failures since the 70s!

This "affliction" has a fair sized following in Britain, seems like it's starting to spread.

Yeah he definately sounds like a candidate for a tinfoil hat or maybe they should put him in a room with pillows on the walls, it is a well known fact that pillows stop EM radiation :)

Or they could all go live in a cave out in the middle of nowhere.

    (Plays Devil's Advocate)

Have you considered the consequences of releasing stupid people outside and amongst the public?

LOL! Typo's are not stupid they just look that way.

Stupidity is the only crime for which there is no Judge, Jury or Appeal process.

There's no such thing as electro-sensitive people.

    Been hit by lightning lately?
We all are Electro sensitive, but even Tesla was in 2-3 standard deviations of the norm and its not that big a range.

Is this a mental disorder or is there at least a shred of evidence that it is an actual PHYSICAL phenomenon?

None what so ever. Electro magnetic waves are just too big to effect our cells. It's like trying to split an atom with a sledgehammer.

    Re: Allergic to Wi-Fi

It depends on the wavelength and on the type of effect.

Electromagnetic waves aren't just radio waves or microwaves. It's also infrared, light, ultraviolet, x-rays and gamma rays.

Regarding frequency (respectively wavelengths), x-rays have much smaller wavelengths then cells and they transport very high energies - high enough for a single photon to destroy molecules. Gamma rays are even of a shorter frequency and they can have nearly any energy, sometimes enough to do amazing things, like photons (or pairs of them, I'm not 100% sure about leptone conservation laws in elementary particle physics) decaying into electron-positron pairs spontaneously (i.e. anti-matter).

Regarding the type of effect, the radiation of microwave ovens meet the resonance frequency of water molecules (I'm not sure about the exact mechanism) which means that water absorbs the radiation and turns it into vibration, i.e. warmth. However, water molecules are far smaller than the wavelengths of microwaves (1GHz means a wavelength of 33cm).

Apart from heating up water, hitting the resonance frequency of other molecules can have devastating effects because organic material isn't as sturdy as water molecules (which acan stand a temperature of several thousends of degrees). Microwaves are known to produce cancer, so being too near to a mocrowave oven (e.g. by getting close to the oven window to see how the cheese is melting) for too long isn't a good idea, in spite of the Faraday cage around it.

As usual, if it's about convenience, nothing can scare us off (including me), so people have no problems with holding cellphones a few cm off their brain. However, if you aren't particularly near to a broadcaster, you are subject to very small energies which are probably harmless.... probably.

Whatever, the theories about electromagnetic waves, in particuler low frequency effects, like living below a high voltage power supply line (which transport AC of a frequency of 16.67Hz here) are a bit dubious. However, as long as we don't know enough about it, we should be a bit cautious and wary, just as with global warming.

Better wear a tinfoil body suit, just to be sure. At least protect body parts where invaluable gene material is stored. The internet should be full of tips about that.

so this guy wants to stop progress and a gigantic convenience for everybody else because he gets a little pain that doesn't go away quickly enough for him? go screw.

I think the bigger problem is that it hasn't been substantiated at all, but he's still trying to stop municipal wi-fi.

According to my research it does exist, which I don't care about, it's a shame that they have it but too bad, progress kicks ***

I like the one about allergy to semen

That might possibly be the funniest thing in the whole world.

    Re: Allergic to Wi-Fi

I fully believe the people claiming this condition actually do experience pain and other problems. I fully don't believe that EM waves are the cause of it.
