All my n0oB questions in one post

Four-socket shields: I have a Defiant pally, and part of the importance of having this build means high resistances as well as high defence. I've been having some mules cubing diamonds, but I have yet to come across a shield with 4 sockets. My paladin is level 25, by the way. Do 4 socket shields only come in later on? Are there any out there that a level 25 character could use?

Trading: If such an item exists, I'd like to trade for it, but I don't know what people usually look for when trading. Should I keep my eyes open for sets? Runes? Uniques?

Golems: If I have a Fire Golem, is it better to max Fire Golem first, or Golem Mastery? Do you get less experience if you let your golem do all the killing for you?

Necromancer: After playing just paladins and assassins, I decided to try a necromancer, and have been learning that you can't let him just charge into battle like the others. A 'mancer should mostly let minions/golems/mercs do most of the work and use curses/bone spirit/etc. So it seems to me then, that a necromancer functions mainly as a spellcaster, like a Sorceress, right? What I'm getting at is that the necromancer should be pumping energy at every level up, correct? Also, for times when combat is needed, does he have to use a dagger/kris/wand? Is there anything stopping him from using a nice, beefy sword or axe?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Only elite shields can have 4 sockets, if you have the str, 165 I believe, you can probably get a 4 soc Monarch for a rune, maybe um or something.

Not sure about the golems, never played a golemancer.

You can use any weapon you want, but you should remember to specilize.
With the bone spell you need to synergize in order to be effective.
Check out the Necro forum, a bunch of nice guides you can use to help build your necro.

Personally I built a skelemancer, cool character to play.

    1. Four Socket Shield and Trading: Not familiar with this build really (what is your main attack skill?), but I'll give it a shot. I wouldn't trade for one. Just find a decent rare, set, or unique one to tide you over till you can find a four socket one on your own later on. They seem to drop pretty often once you get a little higher in the game. If you're on US East softcore ladder, I have a 4 socket sacred rondache with +43 resists that you are more than welcome to. It has a level requirement of around 51, but it'll take care of your resistance needs.
    2. Golems: I don't really use golems because even maxed, they don't really do much in my experience. I do have a point in clay golem and I use him only because he's a great tank. I would suggest focusing on skellies and skelly mastery, but if you absolutely have your heart set on maxing a golem, I'd max golem first and then mastery. Again, though, I'd seriously consider sacrifcing golem for more powerful skellies.
    3. Necromancers are definitely a more passive class, at least summon necromancers are. That said, pumping points into energy may be a mistake. I'd definitely put a few points into energy but I wouldn't go over 50-60. It's easier to just use potions if you really need to and save the points for vitality, dexterity, or even strength. Necromancer's don't have to use wands or daggers. They can use any non-class specific weapon once they meet the requirments. Wands are just more common for the +skills mods they can have and daggers if the nec happens to want to use poison dagger (though I don't think I've ever seen anyone try).

Good advice, innorton, but I do have to disagree with your statement that he shouldn't go for golems. Why shouldn't he use golems if he wanted to? What if someone came here asking "What is the right thing to do if I am making a Glacial Spike sorceress?" Would you answer "Don't make that, I would suggest a Firewall sorceress, they're much better". I don't think the purpose of the Newcomer forum is to diss builds like that. If he wanted to make a skelliemaster, he would do that, right? Right now he is going for golems, and that's his choice.

Anyway, as I said, good advice. And no offence, I just wanted to point this out. By the way, golems are not worse than skeletons, it all depends on your choice of curses (and golem, of course).

None taken, of course. I definitely wasn't dissing his build because I agree that's not the point of this forum. I love this forum as I've stated in many posts. I think that the point of this forum is to share your experience and try to help people out. Maybe I deserved getting called out for not sticking directly to the question asked but I was just offering my advice based on my experience. Note that I did offer him a suggestion if he had his heart set on using golems. I think experimenting with builds is what makes this game worth replaying. I would never tell someone not to experiment, especially if that's what they want to do. He just seemed to have questions about golems, and necros in general so I wanted to offer my experience. I guess it just reminded me of when I started my first necro before reading anything about them and had it in my mind that I'd max skeletons, skelly mastery, and a golem. I found the golem to be a waste of skill points, so I thought I drop a suggestion that he could take or ignore. No biggie. I don't think it's exactly like telling someone not to do something they specifically wanted to do (like your glacial spike example).

Since you are a lvl 25 pally, you can find a 4 socket heraldric shield, but it is not a very good shield.......if you find one,try putting in 2 perfect amethysts and 2 perfect diamonds...this way the shield has acceptable defence and resists too.The problem with paladin-specific shields is the defence of normal stuff really is not that good, only the elite shields are worth it.I was using a superior heraldric shield with 2p diamonds + 2p amethysts = 101 defence + 68 resist all, till nightmare.Actually, ancients pledge is a very good choice since you get the req runes in harrogath, and it offers enhanced defence + 50 resist all as well.Hope that helps

    Helios, maybe this will help;

First of all, the shields. On non-ladder a while ago i found a couple of paladin-shields with 4 sockets and resists (belive it was Crown Shields)
just for fun i socketed one with perfect diamonds, so i ended up with a shield with 114 to all resists :p
The lvl req was 18, but i dont know where to find them, since these were found somewhere at hell lvl. My point is that there are 4sock palashields with resist-bonuses out there for lvl 18 guys (the def isnt that great, but still)

And for necro related questions about builds and so, try the necro forum! There are tons of guides and plenty of ppl willing to answer your questions :)

Golems are in my opinion nothing to max out, they are best used as blockers that take damage letting you do your job without getting disturbed. With only one point in clay golem and some cheap + to skills equip, you can easy have a golem with 5k life. Even if you max the golems, the fire golem wont do more than a couple of hundreds (?) of damage, which is not enough on hell difficulty.

This is the main question I wanted to see answered. I knew that there are lots of 4 socket shields out there, but I was pretty that low-level ones are rare. Neither my pally nor my necro and assassin have come across any. If the shield is crap though, that might be problematic (this is ladder, by the way). A Defiant needs a good shield, but on the other hand, if his resistances are crap, then he'll be weak every venom lord or council member he runs into. Maybe I'll just settle with a good 2 socket for now. If I put 2 perfect diamonds (which I've finally managed to acquire, after much cubing) in there it should be ok...I think flawless gems are more common later on, anyway.

As far as the necro is concerned, I just wanted to try out the golems. I saw this guide and wanted to try it out, even though it was pre-1.10, just for the heck of it :) He serves little purpose outside of being a mule anyways, but like I've said, the approach of not running into battle, but letting your minions do the work is interesting. Also, I've got a lightning merc from Act 3, so he definitely helps to thin the monster numbers.

I didn't post in the necromancer forum because I figured that noob necromancer questions should probably still be asked in the noob forum *shrug*

One last thing - I like the necromancer enough that I might try a sorc. I see a llot of builds though that are based on one element - blizzard sorcs, fire sorcs, etc. Wouldn't that nail them later on in nightmare though? Apparently, the monsters have plenty of resists/immunities...so if your blizz sorc runs into a pack of monsters with cold immunity they're screwed, no?

yes it does/yes you're screwed ;). one exception is the meteor-orb variant, you can find a guide at the sorc forums. the idea is that orb will do ok without synergies so you can pump meteor+synergies too.

The most common sorcs nowadays are "two tree sorcs." Any of the one skill or tree sorcs are generally used for MF since you can get a ton of damage by concentrating on one skill and bosses are not immune to anything as far as I recall. These characters aren't as viable for normal play because as you've mentioned, they have a lot of trouble by hell difficulty. Luckily, it's easy to build a two tree sorc who will only rarely encounter a monster who happens to be immune to both elements. The most common by far is the meteorb sorc who focuses on meteor and frozen orb. There are any number of variations on two tree sorcs, so just pick the skills you like and pump them and their synergies. Enjoy!

edit: bah! always a few seconds too slow.

    Paladin Shields
All of them can have 4 sockets right from the start (the grey, non-magical ones, that is). You have just been unlucky, I guess...

    Golems
I use my golem as a tank, so Golem Mastery is more valuable to me than several points in the golem itself. Besides, Golem Mastery helps all four types of golem with valuable + life. If you like to use a golem, don´t forget a few points in Summon Resist as well. Helps a LOT.

Iron Golem is a bit special, since the Thorns damage will increase with the level of the golem. Also if you have a "slowing" theme, pumping Clay Golem is probably a good idea. If I am not going for any of these two specializations, I keep the golem skills at level 1 (especially if I am going to cast Fire Golem a lot, because it gets extremely mana expensive at higher levels).

Lastly, you do get the same experience (and get the benefit of your character´s Magic Find value) when your golem kills something. However, you don´t get any experience if you kill monsters with Iron Maiden + Bone Wall/Prison,

    Necromancer
Yes, he is mainly a spellcaster. But unless you go for a build that is going to recklessly spam Bone Spear/Spirit or go totally wild with high-level Corpse Explosion, you don´t need to invest much (if anything) into Energy. Summons (excluding high-level Fire Golem) are cheap, curses are even cheaper. It´s pretty easy to get lots of mana from equipment and mana potions are everywhere...You may experience some early lack of mana but those problems will disappear when the necro gets more levels under his belt and finds better equipment.

Nothing stops you from using any sort of unusual weapons, especially early on (Normal and early Nightmare). But unless you are going for a Poison Dagger build or find very specific equipment, he is going to have trouble hitting things in the late game.

HA! Silly sorcs! :D The meteorb sounds like a good suggestion though, so I'll check out a few guides. Thanks!

Story of my life! :teeth: Maybe it's because I haven't done much MF with the actual pally himself. If someone has a few of these shields, I can try to give you what I can for them. Maybe some runes...the only unique I have is my assassin with coif of glory. Anyways, I'm on USEast LoD, Ladder, Normal, usually on at night

I think I might try to see what I'm missing with the necro by getting a wand with skelly skills on it. My build is still on act v normal, even though he's level 31. He solos a lot though, so that might not be too bad.

You should check the shops for wands with nice +skills regularly.

BTW, you don't act like a noob at all. You're new to the game, so you're a newb. :uhhuh:
