see, some people learn to take personal responsiblity early on, and they work. I've been working in some way or another since I was 12 years old.
Mazel tov. So have most of us. I'm glad to say that you're at least paying for your lifestyle choice.

yes I pay more for my SUV than you pay for your bike. a good environmentalist like yourself would never drive anywhere...
Ah, the leap of faith from "I don't drive an SUV because it's a waste of gas" to "All cars are SATAN!!!!" For the record, I walk because I don't enjoy riding a bike. I also love to drive, but I tend towards smaller, more fuel-efficient cars. Haha.

but I earned the money and I should be allowed to spend it how i please without being accused of supporting terrorism.
Where, oh where did I say anything about supporting terrorism? By driving an SUV you're polluting and wasting your money, neither of which is terrorism. It's just stupid.

Maybe when you grow out of being such a b____ you'll get your foot out of your mouth.
I don't have a car because keeping on in Boston is a waste of time and money. When I had a car, it was usually some form of 10+ year old important. A transmission died on one, but after 100K miles, it's somewhat expected. I have an excellent driving record with no moving violations save a speeding ticket since I started driving about a decade ago. Not bad.

Looks like someone needs to get some instruction in deductive reasoning. I'd say you're about 0-4 in your accusations, kid. I also don't know how much of your speech to believe...which one of you Steves was the one who created a whole fictional life, including a fictional dying wife?

Haha, I've got you beat, Llad! I take the public transportation or walk. You'll get no money from me!

As to the ANWR and foreign oil issue, jeez. If you think that tapping ANWR will 1) reduce your price at the pump and 2) make the Saudis quiver in their dashikis, you're way off. Gasoline prices in the U.S. are incredibly cheap; ask a Briton.

Just because we get a new source doesn't mean gas prices will plummet. In fact, they'll stay about the same. A little secret: the gas you put in your vehicle today came from petroleum that was extracted ~6 months ago. See the temporal diffence?

As to point 2, what do Canada, Venezuela and Mexico have in common? Yup, they provide roughly 50% of our imported oil. Do the math, there's bbls (billions of barrels of oil) of our oil under the sand in the Middle East, but most of it goes to Europe and Asia. Who knew? And you wonder why France, Germany and Russia were upset with our land grab. We totally rock!

As to being an environmentalist, this ailn't the thread to get into it, but suffice it to say that making a concious effort to reduce, reuse, and recycle will have lasting effects on the Earth and its critters in the future. By critters, I include your children.

Once again our local Lib gets his facts wrong, SUVs burn gasoline, not oil.
Yes sir ... more fine rantings from our local conserv. Tell me Steve, where do yo think gasoline comes from {besides the pump that you take it out of}

The answer is so ... crude ;)

Thursday, April 22, 2004: NYMEX West Texas Intermediate for June delivery closed up $0.98 at $36.71 per barrel.

Thank you very much!

Dang, Llad, wanna put a guy born 20 years too late into your will? Pleeeeease? Sike! Shoot, I reckon you're lovin' it; though I don't think the onshore oil deposits (do y'all call it deposits? reserves?) will last for the next 10 years, given our porcine ways. Then again, I imagine you'll be done by then.

And you still ake flak from cats whose cars were filled by your work. Best irony ever.

Steve_Kow, please for the love of element 47, think before you try to monkey with geologists on their home turf, as it were.

Heh ... Mac, i'm sure you are doing ok. Train those young minds, get your tenure ... being a prof is a noble vocation.

... and to the Republican for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty, and just us for oil.
:p

Indeed. In fact, around £3.53 for Unleaded Petrol per UK Gallon. Heck, and that is at a recent dip in the prices. That is about $6.2 per UK gallon btw, or around $5 per US Gallon.

Which is one reason why I refuse to buy a car even when my parents say 'but it is such a good idea, it gives you so much freedom' (the other major one is the cost of insurance). And a good reason why small fuel efficient cars are pretty popular over here.

No prob then Steve. I remember that we have discussed energy-related issues before and you seemed to be a pretty level-headed fellow about it.

Have one on me :drink:

As far as oil from South America goes, I recall one of my professors saying that most of the crude from there is heavy crude, which means only about 30% can be turned into combustibles (gasoline, kerosine, etc) and the rest goes to plastics and stuff. Whereas the Middle East has mostly light sweet oil of which about 70% can be turned into fuel. Is that right?

There is some merit to that. Venezuela, one of the USA's top South American suppliers, markets heavy sour crude ranging in the low 20 degrees API gravity (the higher the API #, the lighter the crude oil) while the Middle East oil is generally much lighter and usually ranges from 36 - 40 degrees API gravity.

The heavier sour crude is loaded with sulfur (which must be removed). It is usually very black, viscous, and has higher-chained hydrocarbons. In contrast, lighter oils (such as Oklahoma Sweet, West Texas Intermediate, and Middle East oils) range from black to green to even honey in color and command a higher or premium price.

The amount of gasoline that can be refined from lighter oils is generally much higher than heavier crude. Most refineries will blend the heavier crude with lighter ones in order to more efficiently process the oils.

It is also interesting to note that natural gas (which is primarily composed of methane) often contains condensate and some light oils that can be refined from it. The amount such oil is usually only a few gals/MCF (MCF = a thousand cubic feet). Although that doesn't sound like a lot (42 gals = bbl), many wells can make 1000 -5,000 MCF/day or more ... every little bit helps in a business that is risk/reward oriented.

its funny about the "sitting up higher" and "being able to see" thing.

cuz ya see, if there were no SUV's, then everyone could see. (cept for vans and trucks)...
but honestly, if there were only cars, no one could say "i like to be higher up"

so, the more SUV''s there are, the more people cant see, and the more people (might) buy an SUV, and then we have all these SUV's everywhere and when everyone has an SUV, they cant see...

Then they come out with EUVs (elevated utility vehicles) that roll over in a a strong breeze but can see over even SUVs. It's the natural market progression. Who are you to stand in the way of progress with your silly "logic"?

I'd be driving a monster truck right now if it didn't take up two lanes and four parking spaces. Although now that I think about it that would just about bring me up to the average around here...

Be back in a while, gotta check out the classifieds...
