    African American Artists

I was wondering something the other day. I was doing a project for my Sociology class on African American artists, poets and musicians. My question for you all is: Can any of you think of any other than the well known ones (ie: Langston Hughes, Duke Ellington, Maya Angelou etc.) without looking it up or doing a google search? I found that I honestly couldn't and Im not sure if thats a bad thing or not. I honestly wonder how many peope can honestly answer this question.

I'm sure lots of people could name dozens of rap/hip hop artists.

being a trumpet player myself, two names spring to mind instantly. Dizzy Gilespy (sp?) and Louie Armstrong. That's the ones that come to mind right off without thinking too much about it. Also that's excluding famous hip hop/rap/r & b artists that are currently performing

Hmmm, I guess I forgot to say, I was personally referring to older African American contributors, not recent rap r&b people. I was thinking more like Harlem Renaissance and whatnot.

Louie Armstrong is the only guy I can think of.

    Jean Toomer, author of Cane.

More recently Toni Morrison. Also, Arthur Flowers wrote a book called De Mojo Blues which deals with the African-American experience in Vietnam. Certainly an interesting read.
