Adventures in newbie land....

I am on act II - I have a level 23 barbarian. I had a good merc from Act 1 that I liked - she was my level and she helped me a lot. Anyhow, I hired an act 2 merc, just out of curiosity, not realizing my act 1 merc would be totally deleted and I couldn't get her back. Now I'm stuck with this lame level 12 defensive merc who gingerly pokes away at devils with his spear, does hardly any damage, and gets himself killed all the time.

1) Can I get my old merc back?

2) If not, what's the fastest way to get this bozo experience so he can actually help me? Does he get experience when I kill things or just when he kills things?

3) I also noticed that there is now an intermittent blue aura around our feet since I got this merc - what is that and what does it mean when it comes on?

1. nope, shes gone forever, sorry.
2. The fastest way to get experience for a merc is to let him kill things close to his level. He also gets experience when you things but not as much. Mercs have stricter exp penalties, so try going back to act 1 to raise his level, maybe do a few countess runs.
3. All act 2 mercs have auras like a paladin. IIRC this is the defience (+defence) aura, it could be prayer (+ life regeneration) for all i know. Which ever it is, its turned on by the AI as an "attack", but once its turned on it stays on until the merc dies, or you leave the game.

Have you given him equipment? I have to assume youve got the expansion, in which you can open up your mercs character screen by pressing o. Giving him a good weapon and leveling him up will help is effectiveness

Edit Defensive merc == Defience aura == more defense for people in the auras range.

I recommend a bought/gambled Spetum as a starting weapon for your new merc. I usually go with a 3-socketed one (pester Fara long enough, leave town in between visists and come back to her, and you will eventually find one for sale) with some sort of sapphire and two Eld runes. Against undead (which there is a lot of in act 2), this will effectively be a Ferocious Spetum of Frost.

At level 19, mercs can use Savage polearms, cubed using the diamond+kris+belt+staff recipe and then you are pretty much set for quite a while.

For any starting merc, if you don't have a weapon for them, get anything at all that they can use. Their damage is a lot greater with even a weapon that does tiny damage, than with nothing at all.

The savage polearm that jiansonz suggested is also a great idea.

By the way, that defiance merc will help you get hit less by Duriel, if you're still not past him.

He is in fact the most popular kind of mercenary... The blue aura is good. Check out your defense when it is active, and you'll soon learn to like this mercenary! :)

OK - I'm training him - he's up to level 17, but he'll never be as cute as my rogue was.
Okay, I admit, good point.

My lvl 18 rogue with lvl1 cute skill made duriel stop and stare at her while my necro's army pounded away. I love you Elly! (no, not the Elly that runs this joint)

lol

I gotta say I really prefer the rouge for my Tank/Melee style characters (Pallys, Barbs, shape-changing Druids et al...) With some mediocre gear she can be a real help (Norm & Nightmare esp). Freeze, Knock-Back, Hit Blinds, are just a few options that come in handy. My first character was a Fan/Zealot Pali and his little merc has saved his bacon more than once :D
