Adding performance parts to cars

You think they should be done or we shouldn't mess with factory settings?

There are some tempting devices that would give 30% more power for around $70. There are $100 performance chips that claim 20% more power AND gain in fuel economy just by popping in their chip. Then there are all these performance mufflers and air filters that claim 5% increase in power.

I am wondering if performance parts do indeed work why didn't the factory install them in the first place? Instead of a 200hp $20,000 car they can sell a 260hp $20,100 car.

i work a few hours a day at a performance parts warehouse....some aftermarket products do improve power curves and in rare cases fuel economy too....power tuners or chips can add hp....factory engines are tuned for the average driver and take into consideration wide varieties of driving styles and operating conditions....stock calibrations are not set for max power for users of higher octane fuel....with a chip or tuner it is possible to optimize the spark and fuel curves over the entire RPM band.

btw....there are several hundred enquiries per day about chips/cold air kits/performance exhausts/underdrive pulleys etc that can and do improve performance....there are maybe only one or two per week asking about the type of item you linked....they do not work....if you feel like giving away 50-75 bucks send it to jerry's kids instead
