Activating Hardcore in 1.09 (Curious)

Hello folks,

So I just thought about this yesterday, normally in 1.10+ versions of D2 (Excluding 1.13), if you wanted to enable hardcore mode, but you didn't yet beat the game, you would just open up your registry, go to the correct d2 path, and add a AllowHardcore = 1 DWORD. Now, this doesn't work in pre-1.10 versions of the game and thus forces you to play the game at least one time in softcore. My thought is this, if a friend gave you a 1.09 hardcore character (Level 1), and you placed that file in your save folder and opened it up, would saving/exit and trying to make a new character enable the hardcore checkbox? I'm thinking it would but don't have any hardcore characters atm. If someone is willing to upload a level 1 1.09(a-d doesnt matter) hardcore character, please do so and I'll report feedback.

PS: I do know there exists a small utility program for 1.09 c and d that injects code into the game to enable hardcore mode (That's the only thing it does though, no other modifications are done). However, I don't know the policy for the use of this utility.

I don't have ATMA installed at the moment and I hate ATMA, however.. I didn't know ATMA lets you create hardcore chars (I did know it lets you create softcore ones though.. I'll go and check then) :D

EDIT:

Alright so I installed ATMA and it does have a Hardcore checkbox. So these are my findings:

You can make a hardcore character through the game using a ATMA created hardcore character, but if you do this, you need to have at least one hardcore character in your save directory if you want to create others.

If you were to create a hardcore character, join a game, save and exit, then delete the hardcore character, the game won't remember that you just had a hardcore character and it will not show you the hardcore box for future characters. This isn't a big deal since you can just make 1 temporary hardcore character with ATMA. But it is interesting that the game won't remember its previous state.

Thanks nulio :)

I can confirm your findings because I noticed the same thing when I deeded a few times and deleted the char before making a new one.. :p
