Acta

I've been reading a little bit about ACTA (anti-counterfeiting trade agreement). There's not a lot of information out there. But, from what I can tell, many westernized countries are currently setting terms for this "treaty" in order to put a halt to software copyright infringement, or pirated music/movies/software as I better understood it. The US was one of the pioneers in attempting to reach an accord on the subject.

The meetings began in 2007. And they expect to reach some type of end-product by mid-year. Among other things, the current version of the ACTA would give the federal government the ability to search your laptops and mp3 players for pirated material when you cross international borders, would set into place guidelines for criminal punishments for offenders, and would do the same for civil remedies.

What frustrates me most about this is the bypassing of the legislation process. I know it's nothing new, but this is perhaps the first time I've seen the possibility of the loophole really affecting my lifestyle. The president is basically able to create laws, through the treaty power, without a nod from our representative process. It's a little scary.
