    Act II Merc Question

Hi I'm new to the forum. I was reading the Mercenary info on the home page (http://www.diabloii.net/townsfolk/mercs2.shtml). It says that Act II mercs in nm use thorns if they are labeled combat. When I advance to hell difficulty will thorns be replaced with prayer? Right now I am using a Rogue from Act I. She is a level 48, I have had her since the beginning of the game, but was wondering if a level 47 Desert Warrior would be better, its skill would be combat. Btw I am using a lvl 53 summon Druid.

No they keep the skill they start with. So if you get a NM merc, his aura will be the same for the rest of the game unless you specifically hire another mercenary.

No, your merc would change auras only if you hired a new one. Even if he dies and you resurrect him in Hell, he'll keep his original aura.

BTW, Thorns isn't the most widely used aura. Holy Freeze and Might are far more popular.

Probably. Thorns is one of those skills that should have been tweaked for 1.10, but wasn't, so it isn't nearly as effective as it should be.

    Welcome to the forums.

For a summoning druid, a might merc is probably best - hire an offensive merc in nightmare Act 2.

    Might increases attack damage?

Thorns looks good on paper, but the problem is that the monsters don't do enough damage compared to their hit points for it to really be effective. Might is very effective for summoning types (except for the elusive Lord of Mages.)

I say use whichever one you want. :D I used a thorns merc with my Overlord Guardian, and it was really fun - especially on the cows level!

Everyone reads guides and sees the "optimal" choices for things like gear and your merc. Then they don't dare deviate from that. ;) I think it's WAY more fun to experiment. So what if your character gets smacked around, and you have to start over. At least you're learning about the various skills and options.

edit: Also, be sure to check out our stickied thread at the top. There's a link to a SP-oriented Mercenary FAQ.
