Act 3 merc for Avenger help!

Character: Veng/convic pally, PVM Hardcore
Basically i've got an avenger pally and currenlty using a defiance merc. I seem to be doing okay in hell but would like more damage.
Now i'm not sure if anyone has tried out the act 3 merc but i was thinking crecent moon, viper magi and other fcr stuff for a lightning merc.
Or should i go with the cold caster to be safer?
Anyone do this or is there a reason act 2 mercs are used 99% of the time?
Any thought would be appreciated.
