About Mercs and magic find items...

OK let's say I've got like 50% magic find on my character and I've got some 25% magic find equipment slapped on my merc. Does that increase my overall magic find to 75%? Or is it individual...(i.e. if my merc makes a kill, my 50% percent magic find does not take effect but my merc's 25% magic find does meaning I get a lousier item than me making the kill)

When your character (or any minions) makes the kill, only what the character wears is counted.

When the merc makes the kill, BOTH your MF and what´s on the merc gets counted. So if the merc wears MF, try to make him/her kill all the bosses (especially the act bosses).

if moron gets the kill, he uses his MF+your MF
if you get the kill, you use your MF only.

so if you slap alot of MF gear on your moron as well as on yourself, let your moron get the kill

well, most of the time it is pointless since your merc's damage is a joke compared to your own, but if you decide to run the countess (FI CI always) for example or eldritch (FI CI often enough) where it is likely that the merc will get the killing blow, it is actually useful to give him some mf.

For me, the merc often does more damage than my character. I wonder why...

well, for a meteorb sorc, that he is playing, this would be very surprising.
surely if you are playing a singer barb or a melee mancer, and your merc has an eth tomb reaver, that is a whole different story:)

Because mercs have an additive damage based on their level. Act 2 mercenary will still do nice damage even without an equipped weapon.

I tried an act3 cold merc once ... he kicked butt until hell, then he became completely useless (even though I had him loaded with tons of +fast cast rate gear). I ended up going back to pick up a different merc (yep, act2) that was 30 levels below me, so it took a week to bring him to my level.

I was running a barb, so maybe you'll have better luck with a sorc. Still, if you want to run in Hell, you may find something else is a desired choice for long term. Good luck on the metorb though, I may try one of those myself.

the HF act II merc is far more useful than an act III cold merc.
for one sole reason: he doesnt have to do anything in order ro chill your enemies
and then there's a plus of him being a tank, (possibly very high) physical damage, even elemental (apart from cold) with the proper weapon, better life, def, res...i see no real reason in hireing a cold wolf
well... maybe just the fun of having something else to fight beside you
