Whoops.

Update:
Name: Nevinyrral (Previously Naz_Summoner)
Class: Necro (Summoner)
Level: 15
Last WP: Outer Cloister
Last Quest: Countess
Max Life: 66
Tank Penalty: -25
Points: -15

Died at the hands of a Champion Hell Clan in the barracks. RIP

Char died before any muling, all I found of interest was Cleglaw's Shield and chips anyway, so no prize stash. If needed I could come up with some extra from my next try.

I'm out of this tourney.

Mana burn dumbledores (the big guys with clubs) took off 1700 mana with one hit  that's got to be a bug, right?

I didn't die but bnet habits made me s+e very quickly.

So, there's the score to beat for the moment, last wp = palace cellar, last quest = arcane maybe? I'm not quite sure how the quests are allocated in act 2.

I may continue playing this one just for kicks.

Sorry to hear that shermo I think you're pretty much assured of victory though.

The Dumbledores have crushing blow I think, I have no idea how mana burn works or if that would have had any impact on it though?

Bad luck Shermo, but at least it leaves the rest of us with some sort of chance (very slim in my case  ).

@teh_roy: I really don't know. I have never played a Wolf out of Act 1 Normal before, barely played any HC, heck I don't even know if I've reached the level required to make that decision so I'll just see how I go

I cruised through Act 2 without the slightest hint of trouble, reaching Duriel at level 25 or so. I assumed Duriel would be a walk in the park for my level 25 Hand to Hand character, but boy was I in for a surprise  . I dived right in, forgetting to adjust my /players setting so it was on 5 I think. My merc and spirit were destroyed almost instantly and only a hasty portal saved me from the same fate. Several portals and trips to Greiz later (not to mention several NDE's) I triumphed, learning a valuable lesson about cockiness in Hardcore in the process.

I moved onto Act 3 and completed the first 2 quests. My next destination is Lower Kurast. Also swapped my Rogue for a cold Iron Wolf called Scorch  .

Name: Shadow
Class: Werewolf Druid
Level: 26
Max Life: 399
Questing Points: 39 (I think) - Penalty Points (0) = Total Points: 39
Last Quest: Blade of the Old Religion
Last Waypoint: Flayer Jungle

Snuggles has met his deeds, to normal Diablo.

Things were going just fine, he was down to about 1/4, when he chilled me and followed up with the lightning hose, and I wasn't able to outrun it, banging for potions as I ran. Oh well. I doubt I'll be re-entering, but who knows. Good luck to the rest of ya!

Finshed with 52 points.

Take 2, and I've made it out of act 1 this time :D

Name: Gerrard
Class: Ranger (Bow Paladin)
Level: 16
Max Life: 104
Questing Points: 15
Penalty Points: 0
Total Score: 15
Last Quest: Sisters to the Slaughter
Last WP: Catacombs L2

This one's going to be a Holy Freeze Bowadin - I've already got a bunch of skill points sitting in Resist Cold to power up Holy Freeze from the word go. Backup skill will be a few points in Holy Fire, and hopefully later FoH.

I seem to be changing chars most of the contestants here and I keep dying before i can stash of anything wortwhile... =(
I think I'm too much of an n00b to play a melee char with base vit.
So I'll throw away all my thoughts of being able to do a non-caster.
My optimal char will be an FBall/Orb Sorceress, mainly because of the fact that without sweat i can get +6 to fireball by lvl 19. (leaf runeword).
It will take some time, since I tend to to early level mfing, but I hope to be able to report a killed maggot by tomorrow. Right now though, I am:

Lillan
Sorceress
lvl 1
last quest: N/A
last WP: N/A
Life: N/A

Good going Sledge.

Righto I'm off snowboarding for a week (yeah!) so I won't be updating. I'll take my laptop though so hopefully some progress will be made. Good luck all.

4. No save & exit to escape death.

I want to suggest on this rule...
That you can only save and exit if you are in the town...
For it to be more appropriate for the others to really understand what is "escaping death" is...

I think the person should determine it enough. If your honest enough to particpate in this tournament(people could always just hack a character)then most likely one will be honest enough to admit if it was an esc to avoid death or not(like shermo).

Update: Act 2 nearly done with little difficulty, but a gigantic slug of a problem is looming in the form of Duriel. How can I get a long range sniper character with no tank to beat him? Do I just stand next to him and shoot, denying him the horrible stunning charge attack? Do I try and be clever and run away? Do I give up on no penalties and buy a merc to tank? My plan at the mo is to just stand next to him and shoot while downing pink potions, but that seems very dangerous. Also, will Holy Freeze work on him? Should I use my backup skill (Holy Fire)?

Class: Ranger Paladin

Last Quest: The Summoner
Last WP: Canyon of the Magi

Holy freeze affects everything. There is nothing that resists Holy Freeze, the same way a Holy Freeze boss will freeze you even if you have Cannot Be Frozen.

As for beating him, your best best would be a wand with charges of weaken (-33% damage, if I remember correctly) and letting your merc take hits while you shoot. Try to always have your merc alive to take a beating, because A1 mercs are cheap to resurrect, and will help take the heat off you, even if only temporary due to their inability to tank. Your Holy Freeze should help keep Duriel nice and slow, allowing you to get more hits in until your merc dies.

Well, I can atest to the difficulty of this guy. Got Snu-Snu all the way through to him, and within 5 seconds and three hits she was dead. Holy freeze and big damage locked me in place and it was goodnight. Trying to get the inspiration to go through this again. Got to say that she was a pretty under powered character anyway. Bow was a little too hard for my 2nd HC character.

No noteable items for the stash.

Thanks. I'd like to bounce another idea off someone too: I'm going for FoH later on as a plan B on my switch. That needs Zeal as a Prereq. Perhaps I could level a few times in the fake tombs for the skill points and then tank him with Holy Freeze and a fast swinging 2-hander or Civerb's Scepter? It's kinda against the spirit of my build, but it might be a workable answer to a tricky problem.

I know that everybody is excited about 1.11, but I decided to cool down a bit and play my druid. I gained an extra point by running to my 2nd Hell waypoint, the cold plains, and then tried to do the den. Without crushing blow from goblin toe, I couldn't get as far as I did. I got down to one monster left: a physical/cold immune cursed Corpsefire. Naturally, I shopped a weapon with CTC amp dmg, and after downing many super healers and 2 big purples, got it to work, and managed to take him down to 3/4 health! Wow! Furying with a weapon without any IAS on it is just too slow, apparently, and by the time I triggered my next amp, Mr Corpsefire decided he best be regen'ing his HP's before I give him a pounding. After the long minutes I spent killing zombies in that den, I couldn't take down that final monster...........

The lesson learned is that Hell is difficult and there is no way around that. I guess I'm back to running NM A5 for gambling gold and maybe some good drops. By the way, anyone have any idea when the first cruel of quickness could be shopped? Does the vendor's position in the game matter (basically, does it have to be later on in Hell), or does it depend on your level? Any input on how I could possibly get a nice fury weapon would be greatly appreciated.

@Nazdakka: as to tanking Duriel, I'm sure it could be done with your life. I tanked Duriel with my druid when he had 350 HP's. I had no castings of weaken because deshifting to cast was WAY too dangerous, and all that stood in Duriel's way was my meager 350 HP. You only have about half that, but.....your holy freeze could make up for that by slowing Duriel down around 50% (what is your exact %, by the way?), effectively making him hit you way less often, allowing you time to go to town, get healing, and buy more potions. Plus, the extra time that you have between getting hit means more time for your potions to work, which could partly, if not fully cancel out the issue of duriel beating you up faster than your potions heal you. Good luck and be safe.
