A question that makes me feel rather silly even asking

    Ok, here it goes:

I have certain values in life, I try to help wherever and whenever I can, on pretty much each plane I can offer help.

Most of the time (when I'm not working, since it's pretty much impossible there) I'm nice to everyone and show respect.

Now the problem at hand: 2 days ago, I got involved in a car "accident" (I'm placing the accident between quotes since neither me or my car is hurt at all)

I told a few guys at work yesterday what happened, and eventhough I didn't get hurt and my car didn't even get a scratch, their instant reaction was that I should ask for $100 from the guy that hit me.

I was startled, I didn't have any problems, I even got involved in a more serious accident a few years ago, and I didn't get any traumas or flashbacks or whatever, so I wouldn't need any money for moral/physical compensations.

Yet when I explained that too them, all they could say was I should just ask for a $100, nomatter what. One even slammed his door into my car while talking to demonstrate how easily it should be to ask for money on the spot!
(again, no harm was done here, I have a pretty solid car it seems)

Now, am I really such a nice person, or am I a complete idiot for refusing to ask for money? (maybe I do have the right, but it just doesn't seem right to me, I wasn't raised like that)

PS: most of the cars I see around me have dents and broken stuff all over, I'd hate my own car to be part of those one day...

I think I would go with the no harm no foul on something like that. If it wasn't on purpose, there was no injury to yourself or your car I think a simple "I'm really sorry about that" would be sufficient.

Maybe it is me, but I think it is wrong to simply demand money for something when there really isn't a need. If you actually had to get repair work done, then working with the insurance or settling a cost amongst yourselves would be appropriate.

Hm, maybe it's just me, but did I ever mention the guys at work are my friends?

    A small elaboration:
I work in a steel factory, among a lot of aggressive, lazy, smelly people who don't give a crap about anyone and don't have any respect for any material.

Wow, that must be company policy then to employ only aggressive, lazy, smelly people. How did you come to work there than?

I don't understand where the $100 number came from, seems kind of petty. By asking for that, you could be opening up a whole can of worms.

Nah, that describes at least 70% of the population, so it could easily just be by chance.

Just my two cents, but I think that advice is silly. I wouldn't worry yourself over the fact that you wouldn't take it at all, because I'd see your choice as the right one.

Are you sure these folks just don't have a slightly...odd sense of humor and that it wasn't a joke gone bad?

    Yeah, maybe.

But i'd think that employers would notice that the complete workforce they have is lazy and smelly. I'd think that they would aim to employ people from the 30% non smelly and non lazy people.

    :azn:

They're no doubt already employed in better jobs.

I think your own opinion is what counts in this situation. I would 100% agree with you not asking for money, since it just seems ridiculous because nothing was damaged.
The guys you work with are weird.

Why bother? It's going to piss the other guy off, and he might just say no anyway. I wouldn't ask for the money.

I don't like repeating what everyone else said, but they are right. You work with some odd people. Tell them that the world is no better than the people that inhabit it.

    They belong on Jerry Springer.

Do what they say and get used to it. They'll be managers soon.

You're honest. You should feel a healthy sense of pride about that.

Ignore dishonest people; they will get you nowhere.
