Well, I think this gear is pretty easy to get:

    Shako or Peasant Crown
Low Mara's (usually cheap for 20-21 resist)
    Wizardspike
    Skin of the Vipermagi
Lidless Wall (cheap than HoZ, but you have a deathwish without good block)
    Magefists
    Rare FCR Rings
    Gloom's Trap, Nightsmoke, Lenymo Belts
    Tearhaunch or Waterwalks

You could do reasonably well with that kind of gear. I do think that getthing 75 FCR and max block is absolutely vital though; Sigon's shield might be a good option as it has a +1 to skills and has a good block rate!

Not sure how low we're going here but here's what my singleplayer hammerdin uses and he kills fine.

    Rare +2 pally circlet
Rare +1 pally ammy with fast cast
    Wiz Spike
    Vipermagi
    Lidless with a Pdiamond
    Frosties
    Arachnid Mesh
    Silkweave
two crappy rare fast cast rings

I don't have any skillers either but I have max block, 1.3 k life, max resists, and hit the last FCR breakpoint. Honestly though, hammerdins do so much dmg so quickly it really shouldn't be that hard to make it work.

    2x sojs
    glooms trap
    silkweaves

and for weapons it would depend on the char. trapsin with +3 trap claws necros with lidless and a decent wand etc.

I dont think that 2xsojs are so cheap, its not what u wear on your casters, its what would be good for a hammerdin who is not that rich...

I tottally agree with Aerath with that equipment, spirits really are cheap and useful...

Since I wasted all my gear into my other pally I'll be setting him up with this

    helm-peasnt crown
    armor- GA or a vipermagi
sheild-I'm tryin to get an alma or lidless
    weapon-wizspike
    gloves-trangs,or hellmouth
    boots-aldurs
jewellery-1 to pally ammy dwarf star and/or mandal or cast ring

Is Alma cheaper than hoz most likely by stats you would have good res and try to put some points in holy sheild when ur done.

PS:anybody got an alma 4 trade

I don't know any startagey for a hammerdin who doesnt use enigma just stand there n cast n lure i geuss hammerdins with enigma make me mad so cheap

I duno how everyone defines "cheap" hammerdin gear.
I strong recommend get enigma first (it's vital for ur survive and increases your MF efficiency) Even a ****ty enigma(1.1-1.2K def with high str req) will do the job.
    For the rest,
    Shako
Rare ammy(+1 with all resist shouldnt be hard to get)
A cheap Hoz(I believe u can get a ****ty one for um)
    Wizspike (godly resist and FCR)
2 FCR rings or 2 Nagel
    Gloomtrap/upped nightsmoke/goldwrap/****ty arachnid(um)
a crappy war trav(a friend said he got a 33 war trav for free), otherwise silkweave or even rare boot will do just fine.

Rhythmemotion, "cheap" means the gear you can get when you have just started the game. Say, if you've been playing Softcore and have just began Hardcore, or B-net after singleplayer. It means what you can find in Normal/Nightmare, or trade for items found there. And something you can relatively easy find (You can get a HoZ in NM, but the chances are too low to count on it).
I don't think anyone needs your advices like "you should get Enigma, Shako, HotO, HoZ, don't even think about playing without them". It's just too easy to think that you are good in optimizing your character if you have all the top gear. You CAN play with just decent items - that's the idea of optimization - getting the best at the lowest price.
My variant of Ladder-only poor man's hammerdin:
    Weapon
Spirit (Tal + Thul + Ort + Amn) sword. Pretty much unbeatable for this price.
    Shield
Spirit in a paladin shield with resists. +30%-35% will be OK. Finding a better one with 4 sockets can be a real problem. 4S + 30 allres is not an easy one as well. If you can't find one - use +15 or +20 or whatever you can get.
    Helm
You can and SHOULD get at least +1 to skills here. Gamble for Circlets - if you get a +1 pal/life/fireres/lightres here, it will be great.
A Lore (Ort+Sol) helm is a good choice as well - skills and lightning resistance.
    Gloves
Nothing special here. Rares (Gamble, gamble and then gamble some more - it pays off) - good are ones with life, fire/light or whatever resistances. Magefists are pretty common - FCR is excelent for Hammerdin.
Chance guards - you're making Hammerdin for MF, aren't you? Go for it. +Gold find is also great for Gambling.
    Belt
Same as gloves - gambled rares go here.
Death's Guard set sash. Only 8 boxes, but a Cannot be Frozen mod, which is not that easy to get the cheap way.
    Goldwrap for MF.
    Boots
Rares once again - FRW, life, resist. Can have good MF in addition to other mods.
Sets - Sander's, Hsarus (FRW + Fire res),
    Rings
Greatly depends on your luck with FCR on Spirits. I managed to get a +32% sword and +34% Shield, so it took me only one 10 FCR ring to get to 75% - (10 frames).
So, I recommend rares (gamble once again) with as much FCR, as you need to 75% total. Life, Mana, resists are common on rare rings, so go for it.
Not so much useful uniques - Nagelring for MF. SoJ and Ravenfrost are great, but not for a real "poor man".
    Amulet
Rare/crafted +1 Paladin with resists and FCR, if possible.
For Crafting you can choose between Caster recipe (Amulet + PAmethyst + Ral + Jewel) for extra FCR if you need, and Safety (Amulet + PEmerald + Thul + Jewel) for up to 10% chance-to-block. With a Spirit shield you need a lot of Dexturity to 75% blocking, so a Safety ammy can help.
If you don't have a good rare, take a +3 to Combat magic ammy, which is cheap and is much better than a +1 Pal. You benefit from extra +2 Combat much more, than from extra +1 to auras. The damage boost is better, and you get more precious blocking from HolyShield.
    Armor
Take here anything you haven't got from other items.
    Hawkmail is great for Cannot be forzen, if you don't have it;
    Twitchthroe - for 25% blocking;
    Smoke (Nef + Lum), if you accidently find Lum from NM Hellhorge, is great for +50 resistances;
    Stealth (Tal + Eth) - cheap but gives FRW, FHR, mana regen, some Dex and 25% FCR, if you need it;
    Normal/Eceptional uniques with +1 skills, if you find it;
    Rares (the ones you find, gambling for armor is just too expensive) with general needed mods - life, resists;
A 4T armor, if you're satisfied with the other items you have - it will pay off in the long run.
    SECONDARY EQUIPMENT
    weapon on switch
I think a +3 Redemtion scepter on the weapon switch is great, especialy if you prefer to play solo. A quick switch after battle - and your life and mana is full.
    shield on switch
Spirit, if you want to have your Redemtion level higher.
Possibly Rhyme (Shael+Eth) for 2 purposes: MF switch (+25%) for boss kills and to make you unfreeze if you don't have a CBF mod anywhere else (which is possible). Cannot be frozen is a mod that's useful not all the time, but sometimes - when you encounter a cold attackers. So there's no point in wearing CBF all the time (if you have something more useful in those slots) - but using a Rhyme onle when you need.

Enigma isn't vital at all. Vigor + shift charge goes a long way. And you'll do fine without the teleport. I don't get it why everyone always seems to think teleport is needed on every caster. it's a luxery , not needed. Also , he didn't state if this was mf or not.

I just moved from USWest to USEast.
It took me about 2 months to get my hammerdin
equipment starting from nothing, and he rarley
    dies, even giving hell rushes.

    His equipment is:
    Shako
    Wizspike
    Spirit Sheild/Stormsheild
Spirit Shroud (for cannot be frozen and +1 skills)
crafted belt with +5 fcr and some res
    trang gloves
    aldurs boots
2 manald heals (nice for regenerating life/mana)
and a +28 all res ammy (i gamble alot)

with this, he does decent damage, has 75 all res in hell,
    and works decently for mfing.
All this stuff is pretty easy to find and is realitivaly
    cheap. Hope this helps you.

    enigma

for most casters enigma isnt really necessary, but for hammerdin it makes the game so much easier cause instead of chasing after that last fallen or whatever, you can just teleport on top of him and shoot hammers. makes the game easier also in places like the maggot lair, cause you just teleport on the baddies and hammer instead of just plain not being able to hit them.

    heh

I tend to agree with lunatic. Enigma, whilst very 'pretty', with all it's glitz and glamour mods, is indeed a luxury, not a necessity.

A good old Vampirmagi (upped if you can spare the runes) or even a Que Hagans, are very viable options.

    Skin of Vipermagi
    Shako
    2xManald Heal
    Glooms Trap
    Frostburns
    Silkweave
    Wizardspike
    Rhyme or Spirit shield
    Rare/Magic +skill amulet

Pgems stuff most of it, the most expensive being the Shako, use a Peasant Crown if you can't afford it.

If you get a good hell hellforge drop trade it for a HoZ.

Yes, I'd absolutely agree that Enigmas arent vital for a hammerdin. I myself spent many months using a vipermagi and wizardspike working for a hoto and enigma. Now, I have 3 hotos, a 1376 archon enigma, a 2 from perf bp enigma, and many other goodies. And what good is it if I don't help people with it, so if anyone needs a rush or anything, *DarkJupiter[Ao]
