[Guide] A mathematical treatment of Magic find in Diablo II

THIS SERIES IS CANCELLED AND WILL NOT BE UPDATED ANY FURTHER ON THIS FORUMS.

I have been working this summer with an extensive mathematical "guide" for magic find and rune hunting in Diablo II. It is presented as a video lecture series on my YouTube channel. There is also the possibility to download the slideshow from my Google Drive (see further down).

The title of each chapter reads:

1) Drop chance and probability distribution
2) Confidence levels
3) Magic find% and yield
4) Find item skill
5) Examples and benchmarks
6) Simulations, how to
7) Homework problems
8) Solutions to the homework problems and FAQ

Some videos have more than 1 chapter, and I am considering making a few more parts concerning runes (basically an updated version of Gripphons Lk vs Trav vs Cows guide, but with an emphasis on simulations and statistical interpretation).

The goal of this guide is to learn about the statistical expectation and interpretation of item farming in Diablo II and other similar games.

Here are links to the individual video chapters and to the accumulated slideshow

Intro and Chapter 1 (Drop chance and Probability distribution)

Chapter 2 (Confidence levels)

Chapter 3 (Magic find % on gear and yields)
(Contains an example from Grim Dawn, not included in the slideshow)

Chapter 4 (Find item skill)

Chapter 5 (Examples)

Chapter 6 & 7 (Simulations & Homework problems)
Click here for video, there can only be 5 video links per post.

Slideshow

If you have any suggestions or so, you are most welcome to contact me or simply post below here in the comment section. And if any moderator think that this guide can be made "sticky" please feel free to do so.

I will update this post as I go along with the series. Enjoy.

That was awesome! Thorough but still very accessible. Thanks for all your hard work, this should definitely be added to the SPF links sticky. I look forward to the next installments. :)

Thanks, it is a very mathematical approach but there will be plenty of examples later on.

That's you!? I watched some of it a few nights ago, book marked for later. I'm more excited to finish it now!

Edit
Maybe it was yesterday my days are running together.

Oh damn, PhD in theoretical physics. I guess that's the end for me to feign more knowledge than I actually have.

Update: Chapter 4 about Barb's Find Item skill. I edited the original post in this thread to include that video and also the Slideshow to include that chapter.

In Chapter 4, I asked if someone knew how Find Item works on the Countess because I was not sure. Apparently, Find Item does not work on her, and not on Nilathak either.

Can anyone help me with a list of superuniques that find item does NOT work on? I want to include such list in the final version of the slideshow

With the exception of council, probably any super unique that has unusual drops? Just a guess

so for example griswold, hephasto would also be excluded, I think

I just mean monsters that don't have the 2-item drop. With the exception of council...

I can't remember if it works on summoner or not

Decided to test them all as I had nothing else to do and I was curious. I thought I knew which would and wouldn't be horkable, but wasn't sure. All were tested in 1.14D, HC, Players 1, Hell. A few corpses broke from cold damage, but I reran until I could make sure. Snapchip Shatter breaks every time. I ran Ancients and Nihlathak even though I knew that there were no corpses from them. I took screenshots of every attempt if anyone wants to see them.

Nice!!! You are legendary dude!

Don't worry about the cow king, you can only kill him once anyway :)

Thanks.

Yeah, couldn't leave it incomplete though so I got him added. Also, you can run him multiple times. You just have to have a character that opens the portal and a character that makes the kill.

Nice work @crawlingdeadman . I suspected the Find Item Basin Wiki page would contain that same list, as it's usually very complete, but apparantly it doesn't. Might be something for @onderduiker to add ;).

After some more searching the wiki, I found more info on the Corpses page though, which seems to confirm what you tested.

Where Boss contains a list with some more bosses like Griswold, Izual, the act bosses, ...

Also, surprisingly some corpses which Find Item works on can't be used with Find Potion.

Interesting! I did check Amazon basin for information about Find Item prior to making my compendium, but I did not look at the corpse page.
