    A few MF questions

I have a few questions regarding item drops...

First of all, when is the number of item drops determined (using /players x command)? At the time of a monster's spawning or time of death? Just wanted to know if I could get a boss near death on a 1 player game then quickly type /players 8 for more items just before they die.

Similarly, will it be at all beneficial to switch to higher MF gear just before a boss dies?

Both are applied at the time of monster's death. However I treat switching Player settings before boss monster's death as very cheesy tactic. It's a big no-no for me.
Switching gear before monster death is quite normal.

There is no problem with switching weapons, many people consider that a standard practice. The drops are calculated upon death, but changing players setting is considered cheesy at best and cheating at worst.

    BUGGER, TO SLOW!

players x at time of monster's spawning determines XP (ie. hps)
players x at time of monster's death allows the monster's max item drop chances to be reached - if Baal can drop up to 6 items, with players >= 3 the chance of drop=no drop for each of 6 times is minimized.

the player setting doesn't affect exp/hp even for monsters way out of screen (well, i'm not playing 600x800-slows the game and causes lag).

If XP was calculated at death, getting to lvl 99 would be much, much simpler. spawn minions/baal at P1, then mid way through abttle change to P8 and voila!
Anyway, all seems to be moving along here nicely, nothing else to add.

For a well set up baal runner it wouldn't make much difference at all. IME The biggest time is clearing out the throne room and waiting for the minions to spawn.

XP is determined only when the monster spawns.

and just to spell it out for those who dont know - if you are running the Countess for runes, you want to set the players down to 1. She has a max number of things that she can drop of items+runes. if you maximize her item drop rate with a higher players x, the Countess will more likely drop an item. in this one case you want her item drop chance = no drop so then that chance moves on to a rune/scroll/potion drop and therein increase the chance of a rune dropping.

totally confused you - go look it up in d2.net

    Whee 900 posts

Just to clarify, in general, is it better to MF with /player 8 ?

Depends on where you're running and how fast you can kill at that player setting.

So it's considered cheating? Hmm, alright. I suppose I can just kill stuff at p3.

Say, does anyone happen to know what's the minimum players setting for maximum drops on the act bosses, shenk, eldritch, pindle and hephasto?
