40/15 max or 40/10 min?

Topic =]. This is actually for a barb on d2R (ALL str with a cbboq), but I suppose it could also be applied to an amazon and the like. Which would you consider to be more effective/worth getting? Higher max damage or slightly better minimum/average damage? I have a feeling whether a strike rolls higher or lower than the average damage is based on #'s and statistics which, frankly, I don't know concerning d2. Help's appreciated ^^

40/15max also gives better average dmg than 40ed/15min.

BTW is that Cruel BB of Quickness ethereal? If not, then 3 socket CCB/CCS is better choice... and if you will use this sword for BvB then Eth rune is absolutely needed.

Think about it: 15 max is an increase of 7.5 average damage. It's adding 0-15 damage, of which the average is 7.5 ([0+15]/2=7.5).

10 min is an increase of 5 average damage. (Adds 10-0 min-max damage, average of that being 5)

There is absolutely no difference between 15 max and 15 min in terms of average damage (both add 7.5 average damage normally). It's just that +15 max gives you a chance to roll on a higher damage.

EDIT: spoke too soon, +max and +min do not add to smite damage...

Actually a little OT, on a Smiter toting upped HoZ (46-46 shield dmg) would probably prefer +15 mins, since when the min damage exceeds the max, the game will add to max so that the max is always 1 above min damage. Such a phenomenon can be seen on Isenhart's Lightbrand Broad Sword. It has a base damage of 7-14, but with +10 min it becomes 17-18.

For example, if your overall Smite base damage is 75-78 (shield 46-46 + holyshield slvl 12), a +15 min jewel anywhere off-weapon will push that to 90-91, effectively adding 15 min and 13 max damage. A jewel placed on-weapon will only augment the weapon's damage, and will not be added to Smite.

Correct me if I'm wrong. It's just what I've observed in-game, using Bloodfist's +5 min with upped HoZ and Smite.
nah min/max damage doesn't work with smite

isenheart swords internal damage is really 17-14 so it 'absorbs' 3 max damage before it has effect but yeah over all if you can get min>max then min is better after that point.

You are wrong. +min/+max dmg isn't added to Smite, no matter where you put jewel. Only +dmg (Grief, Astreon's, Redeemer) is added to Smite.

EDIT: pwned by too slow typing

Ah, I meant a bit more along the lines of a more consistent damage due to lower range ^^. Thanks for the replies though, got the answers I need ;)
