4 sock sword/shield possible ?

Hello !

Is it possible to get 4 sock sword/shield in nightmare or do i have to search in hell ?
I'm looking for any kind of sword/shield that's 4 sock to make two spirit runewords.

It's possible but the shield would need to be a paladin-only shield. The lowest req 4os shield (non-paladin) is a monarch and I don't believe they can drop in NM.

The 4os sword however is possible. If you're making spirit you'll want something with low requirements...crystal sword or broad sword are your two best options. However if you happen to come across a different type of sword and you have enough str and/or dex to equip it feel free.

You can wind 4 socket swords in nightmare and it's an excellent starter weapon for a caster, but with respect to (non-paladin) shields, the lowest is a monarch which is an elite shield (and has a level req in the 50s and a str req of 156 BTW). It cannot drop in nightmare. For early gaming, better use Rhyme or Splendor or Lidless.

Is it possible to buy a 4 sock sword from merchant ? (I havent had any luck in my nightmare cow-runs)

Nope, can't buy 'em from merchants. They only sell magic weapons. They might sell an artisan's sword with 4 sox but you can't use it for runewords 'cause it's a magic weapon. You could use the socket quest to get 4 sockets in a sword but you have to have a correct base item.

Hope this should be clear, you need:

• one socket quest reward (act 5 quest one)
• one white (Crystal OR Long OR Broad) Sword
• The sword needs an item level in the interval 26-40 to get 4 sockets from the quest reward.

To achieve this item level requirement use a sword dropped from a monster somewhere in normal act 4, most of act 5 normal, normal cows or early act one nightmare.

Once a white sword drops double check that the area where it dropped has the correct area level (which will be equal to the ilvl) before using the socketing quest on it.

Personally I usually use one from normal cows unless I find one while questing through act 4-5.

I would keep my eyes open for 4 socket swords while gathering the runes from nightmare Countess. Apart from Spirit, the rinewords Stealth, Rhyme, Insight (for the act 2 merc) and maybe Lore are pretty good starting gear as well. If you don't find the base items befory you have the runes, visit nightmare cows.

Nothing in normal mode can have more than 3 sockets on its own and I wouldn't use the Larzuk reward for the proper amount of sockets. You probably don't have many rewards available, so it's better to save them for uniques, set items etc.

Be careful though, if a crystal sword drops from a NM Countess or similar run, don't automatically assume it's level 26-40. If it dropped from a champion or unique in a level 38-40 zone, it'll be higher level and when you go to socket it, it'll end up with up to six sockets (ilvl40 from a monster level 40 is four sockets, however just one level higher at 41 will product six sockets from Larzuk).
