    306% ED rare spear - prefix/suffix

    I picked up this rare spear the other day and kept it for novelty's sake. I was curious how a rare could spawn with a perfect 300% cruel prefix and still get additional ED. I'm guessing it came with a Superior mod (+15%) on the base item, but this isn't really classified as a magical prefix/suffix from which rare mods are chosen from is it?

    On top of the ED, it also had the "adds x-x damage" mod.

    That's new in 1.10: Master's, Ferocious and Cruel (increased Alvl and Clvl req) can spawn on rare weapons.

    Slightly OT: Is it true that the max % ED on Ethereal rares is 350%, because Cruel can't spawn on em? :scratch:

    Etherealness doesn't matter. Cruel can spawn as long as the Ilvl (or Qlvl) is high enough.

    I understand that, but doesn't cruel only go up to 300% ?

    I also read on Arreat that once a certain prefix is chosen, another one cannot be chosen for the same modifier (like the above ones). If that wasn't the case, then I could easily understand that it had picked two of the above ED prefixes.

    For now, I'll just assume this spear had a "Superior" 6% ED on the base item.

    Cruel's and Master's can spawn at the same time because they aren't in the same prefix group. So up to 450% ED can spawn on a rare. On crafted items up to 510% ED (only for blunt and axes weapons: Hit Power and Blood weapons)

    As noted by others it is a matter of affix groups that an item can only have one affix from each group. There are different groups that can have the same types of modifiers in them (typically some of the damage types).

    As for superior items they constitute a different "magic quality" than a rare of or magical item. The "magical quality" types that are handled by the game are
    1= low quality (cracked, etc.)
    2= normal quality
    3= hi quality (superior)
    4= magical
    5= set items
    6= rare
    7= unique
    8= crafted
    9= tempered (unused in the open release of v1.10; but possible in modded games)

    ALL items belong to one and only one of these groups and ther can be no overlap between them.

    Thanks, Loboleal. That explains it. I just had mistakenly assumed the Masters/cruel were in the same damage-modifying group when they are not.
