"Canadian child killed in Cambodia hostage drama
    16/06/2005 - 10:47:38

Four masked gunmen killed a three-year-old Canadian child during a hostage stand-off at an international school in Cambodia today before police raided the building, freeing the dozens of remaining students and arresting the attackers.

The men stormed Siem Reap International School earlier today, seizing dozens of young children from several countries – also including Australia, Japan and Italy – and demanding money, weapons and a vehicle before police ended the stand-off, with witnesses reporting several shots fired.

The gunmen killed the child when authorities declined to meet all of their demands, and police then raided the building, Cambodian Information Minister Khieu Kanharith said, quoting the deputy national police chief, Neth Savoeun.

“They also threatened to kill the children one by one. Then our forces decided to storm the school,†Khieu Kanharith said.

The victim was a three-year-old Canadian, Khieu Kanharith said, although that could not be immediately confirmed by Canadian Embassy officials."

And what if this 3 year old was of african (black) origin? I doubt anyone in the media would care then. Gotta love double standards (extreme sarcasm).

The more people that pull evil crap like that, the more governments will be inclined to start exersizing zero tolerance policies in which they don't waste any time negotiating whatsoever and simply rush the building with the goal of killing everyone who isn't a hostage. It seems callous but if people contemplating a hostage-taking scenario know damn well that the army/police are going to simply put the priority on killing them first and saving hostages second they'll be a lot less likely to do it.

Edit: Who said the Canadian kid was white? I didn't see any pictures.

why would you assume the boy is white?
it is reported only that he is canadian.....there is a good chance that he may be asian/canadian....people in canada certainly won't care when we ask that heads start rolling

bad story. but i am not really touched by it. when you hear this everyday you get used to it. sad isn't it?
it doesn't matter that the kid is canadian, all that matters is that the child is dead

Wait a minute. On the TV they said the robbers killed the child because she was crying too loud.
Anyway the mob punished them after that.

I believe they are still alive, all of them. That's a pretty sedate mob.

I read this in my paper, only the Canadian baby that was shot in the head was 2 years old...

    It's ridiculously stupid and unfortunate....

But why are these people going to CAMBODIA for private education?

Edit: The article in my paper also stated that the leader of these men was a former employee of the school who got pissed at the owner and quit.

And it might have been 3 people total that my paper talked about.

The parents probably work for a large multinational corporation or for an technical or monetary aid agency like USAID or CARE.

That's the reason this disturbed me so much - DrunkCajun and I both attended a private international school for over 4 years whiile living in Argentina. I still have a sister that attends the school.

Both of our parents work in the oil industry, but we had classmates who were diplomat kids (of all countries), cia kids (not that we knew that!), non-profit kids, military kids, missionary kids, and other sorts of multi-national corporations like P&G.

Instead of fire drills, we had bomb and terrorist drills. We had guards at the entrances to our schools with semi automatic weapons. Well before 9-11, I might add. It's a scary world out there.

Yeah me too. Lots of my friends were the so called military brats or diplomat brats. I'm a diplomat brat myself.

Yeah, I doubt the double standard would apply here. The kid was 3 years old for God's sakes..

This gave me flashbacks to the day that the day the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires was bombed. We were in class, and suddenly several agents of what I believe was the Israeli Mossad burst into our classroom and escorted the three Israeli students in my class out the door (Oren, Michal and Erez). The three of them knew the men, so we weren't too freaked out, but it was a little disconcerting. Moreso when the teacher received a call over the intercom informing her (not quietly enough) that the Israeli embassy had been bombed and that "security personnel" would be escorting the Israeli students to safety.

Okay, scary. But wait a minute--they're escorting them to safety? What about the rest of us?

    Anyway, this is scary stuff.

Damn, that's like rescueing only two people from the Titanic in an oceansteamer, waving goodbye to the rest of the "floaters"..... Well, that's actually far worse, but still.... ;)

I hope nothing happened to your school, right?

It does show how fast, well informed and effective the Mossad is!

    David.

EDIT: I think your link is bad, could be just me though.....

I changed the link, this one should work.

And no, nothing happened to us at the school, but it was a little disconcerting to spend the rest of the day wondering.

It was, frankly, an eventful childhood. A year or so before that a coup attempt had cut our school day short as word reached the school that tanks were driving down the interstate towards the capital and the school scrambled to get us on buses and home before anything happened. We ran "alternate" bus routes for a week after that just in case.

Argentina isn't the most stable of countries, no.... Tanks down the street! Damn, that's pretty heavy stuff! Especially as a kid.

Most of the people I speak that have lived abroad in their youth really wished their parents could just find jobs in their home-country, especially the ones that moved around a lot. But, eventful it is! :)

EDIT: "The final death toll was 29 killed, and 242 wounded." That's a lot! "mostly civilians, many kids." Horrible.

    David.
