2 rules to obey

If walking is such a hassle for you that you need a pedometer to make sure you're getting enough, then I'm afraid all is lost.
Ok Im just curious how far I am going really . I havent even checked the distance yet but to be honest its enough to wear me out . As I stated before , I was in a serious motorcycle accident and sustained a major concussion that's lasted about 8 months now . So any exercise Im getting is more than what Iv'e been able to do for almost a year . And having a wife and two kids tends to make any exercise I get a luxury , not a given ...

That said , Im now on week 3 and the walking is becoming more routine than a chore . You dont realise how out of shape you are until you havent worked out for a while and try to start doing it again . Im enjoying more energy , my clothes are fitting better , and Im eating much better than I was . Im guessing the rapid weight loss will slow down a bit now and level off but Im still continuing to work out . So no more posts from me until the first month is over and done ...

Wasn't there some big study not too long ago where a bunch of scientists got together and spent however many hundreds of thousands of dollars to find the best diet? And what they found is that the best diet is to eat less.

I am from Nova Scotia, Canada (since you asked).

The fact is: almost the entire body is designed for walking. Walking should feel almost as natural as breathing. When people make it out to be a chore, it sounds like the goal is to never walk unless absolutely necessary. This attitude sounds disasterous imo.

Let's say 170 pounds is clinically 'overwight' for your height X according to body mass index (just for example). Should your goal be to count callories/steps such that you steadily maintain 169.5 pounds?

I mean, can someone really count thier steps and count thier callorie intake for the rest of their lives? Should this be necessary?

I wish TheDarkSide all the best in attaining his goals, but I really believe playing number games is going to fail. The reason most people switch to skim milk is so they can keep the ice cream, when we all know it is much better to just remove the ice cream for optimal health. People replace butter with margerine mainly so they can continue devouring cake everyday. Number games allows people to keep cheating themselves like this. It's better, imo, to have an attitude where you want to do much more walking than the bare minimum.
The whole body is designed for walking? I guess me and plenty of other people have malfunctioning bodies then. There are plenty of reasons why walking can be painful or in any case less than pleasing, ranging from bones to joints to muscles to sinews. I like walking, but my knees don't.

I do agree fully on the futility of a diet and using numbers as a way of attaining a proper weight. It get's even worse when people feel they have to spend a lot of money on all kinds of retarded pills and programs that all come down to using those pills and eating less and/or changing what you eat.

Excercising and eating less and not drinking beer and using pills means... people lose weight?! Those pills must be the thing doing the trick!

If you want to change your weight you must change the way you think. You don't follow a diet, you change your life style. You don't go to the gym for two months, but for the rest of your life. There are reasons that there is such a thing as the jojo effect.

Wasn't there some big study not too long ago where a bunch of scientists got together and spent however many hundreds of thousands of dollars to find the best diet? And what they found is that the best diet is to eat less.
Why doesn't this suprise me.

Two rules:

Don't stuff your face.
Work out.

All alcohol has a lot of calories, not only beer.A study has shown that many people are not aware of this. I've seen a few calorie tables, and whiskey or vodka were nowhere to be found.
Another problem with diets is that the body goes into energy saving mode,it just starts using the calories it gets more efficiently. That is why , at first, you lose weight fast, but the last few pounds refuse to go.Since mankind in it's entire history has had to fear famine much more than overeating, the body has evolved in such a way that it will store calories immediately, but release them only when neccessary.

And calorie tables are pretty inaccurate at best, and so are labels on food items. So I would not rely on them too much.People have different metabolic rates, one guy might be able to do with 2000 Kcal, another of same size might need 3500 , doing exactly the same amount of work. Many people know one of those guys who can eat all day ,without picking up an ounce.
