2 part question

First where is the best place to lvl a lvl 50 merc? I have been doing act 5 in normal mostly and he kills most things in 1 hit so its fast killing but low exp. I took him to the hellforge for laughs and he killed hep is 4 hits. I got him to go with my bowazon to try and get past the nightmare aincients. Im lvl 60 and its been a cakewalk up to them for the most part but they just keep spanking me. Second part is if i get the merc to 60 with me think it will give me the edge to take them down? I got a might merc and my valk can hold one of them easy. I just need something to take the heat off me so I can get one down fast. For some reason I seem to always get one that is immune to physical which isn't to bad but I had 2 that were the last trip there which stunk bad.

Hey for a lvl 50 merc, I would say either pindleskin or diablo in act 4. Basically you might get some interesting drops in both cases, and they provide decent xp. If you do pindle, try and let your merc do all the killing, he gets more xp that way. and if you can do diablo fairly easily, that works too. You just go and kill everything and your merc gets a bit of xp from that. That's all in nightmare, of course. Hope that helps for the 1st question.

thanks for the replys. I looked at that chart and it said act 4 nightmare so I tried it. Merc splats at the first named or large group I come by. Doesn't the merc need to get the kill shot to get any exp? He has great damage output but can't take a hit it seems. If he nneds to get the kill shot it will be tough in nightmare cause I have to help him and there's no way he outkills my skystrike.

When I picked up a new merc recently, I primarily leveled him in NM Cows. I found that even with me do 95% of the killing he still leveled up pretty quickly. When my Merc reached around 67-68 or so, cows weren't improving him as quickly and I started running act1 hell for a while. Anyway, go ahead and kill away. When it is convenient, let the merc finish 'em off so he gets more experience, but he is still earning even when you are killing. Hope this helps.

Edit: Btw, according to the table a level 50 should be leveling in nightmare Act3, not 4. Also, the reason I used NM Cows is that they are around level 60, and when you are within something like 5 levels of their level you get max experience. As they are uniform, rather than more random groups of monsters in the acts, when you are killing near their level you can be assured you are always getting the most from each kill.

Your merc does NOT have to make the kill to get exp, though he gets less if you kill. I think in msot cases, most mercs around lvl 50-60 won't kill fast enough on their own anyway to make it worth it, so you might as well kill.

As for which act to be in, I personally detest most of act 3, and I find that you can get good experience in act 4. Since you havea bowazon, the river and chaos santuary probably aren't too difficult areas for you to clear out relatively quickly. There are also lots of enemies in that area, so you'll get good xp, plus there's always drops from diablo. pindleskin is a good place also. each guy the merc kills gives quite a bit of xp, and with decent equipment on him, the merc shouldn't have any trouble surviving at nm pindle.

Well I got my merc to the same lvl as me and tried the ancients again. Still a no go. My valk gets one on her and I get the other 2. The merc can't get and hold one on him for long before it either kills him or jumps back onto me. He has about 1100 life and defense and his max damage says 722, so if he's under geared I have no clue how to fix it. After 5 lag deaths and a couple stupid mistake deaths I gave up for a while. The might merc is nice for the damage bost it gives me but Im almost thinking to go the way I normally do and get a barb merc. I know they can tank and I have some nice gear that one can wear. Might would be nice in hell for me but I have a barb merc with my frenzy barb that can solo hell mobs with little to no trouble.

The Answer is simple let the merc kill everything in an Eldritch/Shenk run (in nm) my merc levels at first once a run lower down then about 1 level per 2-3 runs. I use sorcs mostly static them down and Voila. U have a leveled merc.
