1st untwinked single pass guardian: PJ/CS Zon

    1st untwinked single pass guardian: PJ/CS Zon

    After making my first attempt at an HC untwinked single-pass guardian in the Gold Diggers Tourney with a barb and slowly grinding to a halt, I realized two things: I enjoy unwinked single-pass play, and I needed to figure out how to play it. So I shelved my tourney char and decided to try my first javazon, something I hoped would be a lot less weapon dependent. After some research, I decided to try plague javelin/charged strike. She was of course untwinked, but I did not use the gear restrictions of Gold Diggers. I used GoMule as extended stash, RWM and RRM. She did around 95% full clears, but skipped hell nili for now.


    The Build
    I imagine that every possible java build has been done millions of times, but here is her skill/stat layout:

    The idea was to chuck a PJ from range then charge into melee with CS and use Jab on LI's. I really enjoyed the play style. The way PJ scales in a non-linear fashion, I don't think it would be useful without all 40 points. Seeing 16k-16k in the LCS on an untwinked char is pretty cool, and it seemed to be quite effective. CS was great on mobs and single large critters, althought it wasn't great against single small ones. The bright side is that the lightning end of it always hits. Decoy was used a fair bit to take preassure off or to lure single tough monsters like Lister and Co.

    She used a Prayer merc with Insight, although she experimented with Freeze very briefly in NM until going back.

    Her Finds
    Of course in untwinked play, the gear matters almost as much as the skills. She was blessed with some great luck. Treehead in act1NM dropped Peasant Crown, which was later socketed with a PTopaz and used until the end. Although I had been planning on 'rhyme' in a bone shield then grim shield, NM Andy amazingly dropped Moser's Blessed Cricle, which was 2xPDiamonded and used until the end. In act2NM she found a 4os Partizan for 'Insight' and the merc used it until the end. Late in NM (either Meph or Diablo- I forget) she picked up Trang's Gloves which with their +25% poison skill damage were perfect for her build. She made herself 'Peace' in a mesh armor to save points on Valk. She went through dozens of javelins, including some decent ones from Anya, imbued ones, and crafted a few as well. She found a few nice AR charms and one 5 res all SC. She found Natalya's boots and used them until late act5H where she found Aldur's boots. With an Um found in act2H, she made 'Duress' in a mage plate for her merc, replacing 'smoke'. She had not found a single unique ring or ammy until act3H, when she found a Nagel and Manald within two minutes of each other. A lightres/life belt was used for a long time until an IK belt droipped in Act3H. Her switch setup was a lifetap wand and a rare pavise with +blocking, some resists and a socket for a PDiamond. The merc wore a 2PTopaz/10FHR great helm until Hell when he was given a crafted blood helmet.

    43 total uniques including Maelstrom Yew Wand (grailer), 2x Swordback Hold , 2x The Chieftan, 2x Hellplague, Kelpie Snare, Warlord's Trust, Pierre Tombale Couant and Wizardspike

    Incredible rune finds were Pul in Act1H, Um in Act2H, and Lo in Act5H.

    Questing/Screenines
    She had been absolutely slaying everything until the start of Hell, once light and poison immunities started popping up more frequently. With mobs of mixed resists, she would try to focus on the non-LIs first, then switch to jab to finish things off. One particularly nasty stair trap in act3H caused some concern. In act4H she began encountering her sworn enemies, and the battles with them always lasted longer than she liked. By Act5H, she was meeting a large number of light/psn immunes, but for her troubles she was rewarded. She managed the ancients on the first roll, although she did stand back to let the mrec finish an FE Talic. In the WSK she encountered 2 bosspacks and 1 champ pack of these nasties, and there were some scary moments. Lister and Co were separated 2-3 at a time with decoys and didn't give much trouble despite conviction/spectral/CE mods. Baal was the usual cuddly teddy bear, and went down quickly.

    In all, a very fun char and a good learning experience. Untwinked single pass HC is a very fun way to play. I will likely give Gold Diggers another shot now that I have a better idea how to play this way. Thanks for reading!

    Well done on the untwinked single pass char. I currently am at the start of nightmare with my first untwinked single pass character, a wind druid. Did you do most of the killing in normal or nightmare or play more patiently and let the merc get the kills for the additional mf?

    Trang-Oul´s gloves was indeed a very useful find. And a Lo rune, that´s awesome! Not for the usefulness for this character, but for the sheer rarity of it. I know thay are easier to find than in earlier versions, but it´s only about 3 times as easy (which means they are still incredibly rare!).

    I do not notice any Cannot be Frozen in your equipment. Did that lead to any troubles? Myself, I would probably have preferred a nice Rhyme over Moser´s.

    That Might + Spiders stairs trap looks very scary! Well done surviving that.
    Were the other temples kind to you? For me, it´s often the last two that are the worst (the combo of archers, beetles, bats, and in particular, those damn snakes!)

    You didn´t find an elite polearm to make a bigger Insight?

    You were standing next to an FE Ancient??! Is the FE bug really fixed now, then? (because doing that is asking to be instakilled in v1.10-1.12!)

    I have a question about the ctc Valkyrie on the armor: I suppose the Valkyrie gets recast if it triggers while you are fighting, and that she´s cast on your position? Can´t that be dangerous if she was busy doing some important tanking (e.g. an Extra Strong archer pack in the backround), then suddenly disappears from that spot? I wouldn´t like to not be able to rely on my summons to stay where they are...



    Glad you liked it.

    One nice thing about it is that you can play the exact same build another time, and may have a very different experience, depending on the gear you find. I have often changed mercs, and sometimes even altered part of the character build because some very special item has dropped.

    Congratulations.
    Playing HC untwinked single pass is of great hornor.

    One question though, why do you choose Power Strike over Lightning Fury?

    @wielanja- Sometimes I would try to let the merc get final hits on bosses or champs, but not everywhere-I'm not patient enough for that.

    @jiansonz-I didn't find any 4os elite polearms unfortunately. No, I didn't stand next to the FE ancient once his hp got low as you can see in the pic. The valk gets cast where the hit happens, so if in melee, next to her, but with a PJ its where the PJ hits. I didn't find it to be a problem considering the number of points it saved that could be dumped into offensive synergies. CBF from rhyme would have been nice, but the insane res boost from a 2PDiamond Moser's opened up so many options.

    @sylecn- I don't really know. I was using power strike before CS and I just dumped synergy points back in PS for no good reason. I was just wondering that myself as I wrote the writeup.

    The FE bug is not about the death explosion itself. It´s about that explosion damage getting applied when it´s not supposed to. For the Ancients, it usually happened when they started their attack animation. This was at its worst in v1.10, where I lost an assassin against FE Madawc in Nightmare. Maxed fire resist, 900 life, all gone in an instant. Note that this was right when I started fighting him, so Madawc was also at full life when it happened.

    The bug itself wasn´t fixed in v1.11/v1.12 but the damage of all types of FE explosions (buggy or not) was nerfed a lot in Hell difficulty.

    Amazing achievement and a very nice write-up, congratulations!

    Tackling gloams in HC untiwnked is just crazy for a PJ/CS zon, imho. Grats on doing fine with them. Be grateful none of them wore conviction ;)

    Wow, I didn't realize it used to be so bad. I have played D2 for ages, but I was only a casual/occasional player until about a year ago. I guess I missed out! :newhere:

    Congrats on the guardian.

    In my hands, the valk on Peace was pretty badly bugged. There were a bunch of character effects that would make the valk disappear. These were associated with timer effects on the character expiring. Examples for me included curse expiration, poison expiration and shrine expiration. However, not all curses and shrines caused the valk to poof. I know amp damage was one of the curses, and I think combat/armor shrines. Skills on a timer might have also caused problems I seem to recall holy shield, and possibly fade. But I'm less sure about timered skills. This may have all been cleared up in a later patch, but in 1.12 it was certainly a problem.
