1.11 vs 1.11b
How do you know which of the two you're playing?
When I do get info on the D2 application, it tells me 1.11b. Of course that is on a mac. However, I'm betting that looking at the application's properties in Windows can get you the answer you are looking for.
Otherwise, you could put Peace on a merc and see if the game crashes.
Aha! I found it! Patch.txt lists a version history  I've got 1.11b. Thanks for giving me a nudge in the right direction, Cattleya.
OK, I have to ask: what is different between 1.11 and 1.11b?
While the 1.11 patch was developped, the guys at Blizzard never thought of the possibility that people could give the new armor runewords (namely, Peace) to their mercenaries. So when one crazy person got this wild idea and tried it (it might also be the case of "a series of unfortunate events"), and when the merc tried to summon a valk, the game crashed. Shocked by this amazing discovery, which hadn't surfaced during the long period of extensive testing, Blizzard released the 1.11b patch, which solves this problem: Mercs (and Iron Golems) cannot summon a valk any more!
Also I think there were a couple of PvP exploits that got fixed in some manner.
Ah, I see now. Thanks!
I've never made any of the 1.11 class-specific runewords, but I can see where Peace would be interesting. Too bad about the merc/golem summoning, though. That would have been fun to watch!
I wonder if a Valk summoned by your merc would have it's "leash" attached to you, or to your merc. If it was attached to your merc the Valk could potentially wander quite far away from you and stir up a mess load of monsters to make your life more difficult.
Still, having the Valk would be helpfull.
The reason it crashed is because mercs cannot have minions, only players (and in some way Council Members) can. So your question cannot be answered.
So what you're saying is, I just crashed the game! Go me! That must make me some kind of 1337 haxxor?
Yeah, it's standard Blizzard's solution to every problem: if we cannot make it work properly we will simply disable it
1.11 b also fixed a terrible battle.net access problem for Mac players.
It's because it'd take more than just text-file editing on Blizzard's part to change something more internal
