Wyatt Cheng on Life and Healing Issues

Not a developer interview, but Wyatt Cheng popped up on Reddit yesterday to answer some fan questions and drop some dev theory about healing, damage, EHP, monster attacks, and other related issues. As you guys heard on our podcast interview, Wyatt likes to get into the nitty gritty details of skills and stats; that can’t really be done in verbal communication, but it’s well-suited to text, and that’s what he gave us:

Major Changes to Firebats in Patch v1.08

Wyatt Cheng shared some details and theory about big changes to the Witch Doctor’s Firebats in Patch v1.08. The change is only half-in on the PTR; the mana cost changes are in but the damage buff is not, but both will be fixed before the patch goes live, for both people who are still playing the WD.

Extensive Slides from Jay Wilson’s Diablo 3 GDC Postmortem

We’re still waiting for videos of the GDC presentations by Jay Wilson and Wyatt Cheng, but today we’ve got a huge selection of photos of the Powerpoint slides Jay used to illustrate his Diablo 3 Postmortem, thanks to Secondii who points us to Japanese site Game Watch. Natalya’s Wrath Becomes More Disciplined

Patch v1.0.3 provided an undocumented (and unintended) boost to the partial set bonus of the Natalya’s Wrath item set. Since the patch, a Demon Hunter wearing any 4 pieces of the set will regenerate 2 Discipline per second. That might not sound like a lot, but the total Discipline pool is only 30, the natural refill rate is quite slow, and there are very few skill or item options to boost the total pool or the regen rate. Basic Attack Removal Clarification

Beta testers may have noticed that the basic attack is no longer assignable to a mouse button. This is because it’s not in the skill interface to select. All characters begin with a skill on the left and a basic attack on the right (melee for Barb/Monk/WD, ranged for DH/Wiz) but once you’ve swapped that out for a skill you can’t get it back. You still go to basic if you’ve run out of resource to use a skill. Khalah wanted to determine if this is a permanent feature:

7 Slots for 6 Skills?

With the recent systems update, many have been concerned that the dedicated potion button was a decrease in the total amount of active skills. While it may look like that at first glance, we see that we still have 4 skills that are on the hotbar bound (by default) to numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4. The fifth and sixth skills are for your left and right mouse buttons – RMB and LMB respectively. By simply dedicating the 5th hotbar skill we did not see a fall in the number of skills we can use, but a removal of the option to have an extra slot with the same skill active.
