No Torchlight 3… Here’s Hob!

The guys at Runic Games just revealed a new upcoming action/puzzle game called Hob. Runic Games, co-founded by Diablo co-creators Max and Erich Schaefer, was previously best known for creating the Diablo-type Torchlight games. Their new game Hob is reminiscent of Zelda type exploration puzzle solving titles, and does not include the endless clicking combat of an ARPG.

Vote: Torchlight 2 Curious?

Torchlight 2 launched last week, with considerable interest from the Diablo community, both for the Schaefer brothers connection, and out of a general interest in ARPG type top-down clickers. Furthermore, Torchlight 2 provides an intriguing yin to Diablo 3’s yang in many key features: Torchlight 2 offers full mod support, no online-only requirement, no Auction House, skill and stat points to assign, a far higher drop rate of sets/uniques, and more.

One life to live#55 : Hardcore to the Max

On the day of Torchlight 2’s release I was able to talk with Max Schaefer about Hardcore. To say I was elated is an understatement. Being able to talk to one of the people responsible for your gaming childhood and creating the mode you love was a thrilling experience. Runic Games Live Chats on Reddit

I went through the transcript and pulled those, gave them some formatting, and you can read them all below.

Erich Schaefer on Item Design and Story

I really enjoyed this interview with Erich “the Silent Sibling” Schaefer, conducted by The Critical Bit. In it Erich answers questions about TL2’s design, company creation and structure, things they learned and changes they made based on beta feedback, and more. I’ll quote two bits, about story in aRPGs and and item system, but I recommend that you read the whole thing.

Max Schaefer on D3, TL2, and More

Runic Games showed off Torchlight 2 at E3 last week, and the Cynical Brit talked to Max Schaefer for twenty minutes, and it’s an excellent conversation. Max shares his thoughts about Diablo III, says what he likes best about D3 (surprised me with his answer), reveals what he’d have done differently if he were (still) the lead designer of D3, talks about how TL2 handles difficulty with more options and player control than D3 does, says where he thinks the ARPG genre can go or expand in the future, and more.
