Diablo III: First Best Selling PC-Only Game in Two Years

Video game sales figures for May 2012 have been released by industry calculator NPD Group, and to no one’s surprise, Diablo III was the best selling title of the month. These sales figures are for box copies only, and do not include digital sales, which is part of the reason they say total sales have been dropping every month.

Assorted Diablo III Infographics

I’ve had these three infographics sitting on my desktop for a week (or more) and haven’t really found a post that they fit neatly into as illustration. So I’m just dumping all three into this post and hopefully they’ll go side by side like skyscrapers; like the flaming III logo behind the demon skull of our game of choice.

Diablo III Becomes Fastest-Selling PC Game Ever

I am not surprised when I see the numbers at all. My guess was that Diablo 3 would sell at least 4 million copies day 1 so I was not that wrong in my prediction. In the first day Blizzard sold 3.5 million copies of Diablo 3 and this did not include the WoW Annual pass with its 1.2 million subscribers. One week later and there are more than 6.3 million people playing Diablo 3 and it is still growing. The game placed itself as the fastest selling PC game ever and Amazon’s most pre ordered PC game ever.

Will Blizzard’s Reputation in Korea Hamper Diablo 3 Sales?

I don’t follow StarCraft 2 in-depth but in Korea the original StarCraft was a national obsession with pro gamers becoming celebrities, TV shows dedicated to the game and tons of merchandising. With Diablo 3’s release now a matter of weeks away, the Korean Times has put together an article which looks at how Blizzard’s reputation has changed over the years in Korea and how previous events could hamper sales of Diablo 3.

GAME Go Into Administration

Unfortunate news today, GAME has gone into administration.  It was hoped a buyer would step up and save the flailing chain but that hasn’t happened.  So, the CEO of the high-street retailer has resigned this morning and shops up and down the UK are beginning to close.   GAME was one of the first to offer pre-orders of the Diablo 3 Collector’s Edition, so anyone who, like me, placed their orders early will be, with much composure, wondering “OMG, WTF?!?!  This also applies to regular copies of the game.

Diablo 3 Second Most Pre-ordered Title

No release date as yet but it hasn’t stopped an increase to pre-orders for Diablo 3. According to the latest US pre-order figures from our friends over at VGChartz, Diablo 3 is sitting in second place just behind EA’s Mass Effect 3. Diablo 3 is also the only PC-exclusive title in the top 10 list which is pretty impressive when you consider what it is up against.

Diablo III Pre-Orders

VG Chartz has posted an update on the most pre-ordered games of the month. Diablo III is in 10th place, which is impressive when you consider that there’s no release date yet, no beta date yet, and that “late 2011” is the soonest date anyone can take seriously.

WoW:Cat’s Record Sales… Diablo III Preview?

World of Warcraft:Cataclysm launched on December 7th, and moved a record number of copies. Just over 3.3m were sold in the first 24 hours in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Europe, Russia, Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. This was an improvement over the 2.8m sold of the last WoW xpack, and is a record for any PC title, though the sales and revenue fell far short of the all time record for any video game, most recently set by Call of Duty: Black Ops, which launched last month and sold over 5.5 m copies (for all 3 consoles plus PC) in the first 24 hours.

Do Starcraft 2’s Sales Reflect on Diablo 3’s Potential?

Some sales figures for Starcraft 2 are beginning to emerge and they’re impressive. The game sold 1.5m copies worldwide in the first 24 48 hours, (stores + digital downloads),  and 721,000 copies in US stores in July (after launching on July 27th), more than any console game sold during the entire month. In fact, Blizzard held the top 5 spots in PC game sales for the last week of July, with SC2 and SC2:CE at #1 and #2.
