Act Five and Reaper of Souls is More “Gothic” than Diablo 3

I’m sure I wasn’t the only one to notice the strong emphasis the Diablo 3 developers put on just how dark, gothic, gory, etc, Westmarch and Act Five are going to be in Reaper of Souls. They stressed it in the Reaper of Souls debut at Gamescom and talked it up in numerous interviews from that show. And even if they hadn’t, it’s quite obvious from the visuals in the gameplay movie and the screenshots that the darkness has been turned up and that Westmarch is goth enough to s**t bats.

Comparing Diablo 2 to Diablo 3 Gear Sets

Once again, one of the new gear sets has set off a huge debate.  This time it’s yesterday’s male wizard gear set, which featured armor liked by almost everyone, but topped, like a living Christmas tree, with that huge, shiny, silver “starfish” hat. Since giant hats have been a theme of most of the wizard gear shots, fan patience has grown thinner, and it didn’t take long for people to turn on this new image.

Gheed! Remix

Chillietaco sent us word of his recent Gheed remix video, and since it’s a slow Sunday and I derived some amusement watching it, you may as well. It’s a techno-style mix with lots of game sound effects and bits of Gheed’s dialogue. Including, of course, his infamous, “…it also bothers me every time I sit down.” line.

Check Out the New Blizzard Concept Art Gallery

1

Bashiok resurrected the @Diablo Twitter feed to announce that Blizzard has added a new concept art gallery to their official website. It’s only concept art; no screenshots or cinematic shots. Plus, putting it a very welcome step above just like their fan art gallery, you can sort the images by game world, to concentrate your visual powers entirely upon Diablo, Warcraft, or Starcraft eye candy.

Arreat Summit and Tristram in 3D

1

A fan by the name of Anubin has been using Google SketchUp to create a 3D version of some iconic areas of Sanctuary, as seen in Diablo and Diablo 2. These are not hand made with loving textures and colors and all that cool stuff, like the masterpieces Delowyn turns out, but for someone using a free tool of limited power, they’re pretty snappy.

Diablo 2 Jigsaws, Acts 1-4

1

After a very slow week for new Diablo 3 news, we’re going back to the old days, with another installment of Diablo 2 jigsaws. These are everyone’s favorite huge, map-like images of entire levels, created by Alibabos who pieced together dozens of individual screenshots for each image. We’ve got four newly added, including the Outer Cloister, the Ruined Temple, the Act 3 Sewers: Level 2, and a lonely Diablo standing in the pentagram area of his Chaos Sanctuary.

Weekend Fan Art Flashbacks

We’ve had a ton of great new fan art lately, as HK has been documenting in the weekly posts. But we’ve also still got some stuff from the archives; pieces that were originally posted by Blizzard as honorable mentions in their 2006 fan art contest, that have never before been posted in our fan art gallery.  Here are five more such pieces, two of which are original monsters/settings in the Diablo universe, 3 of which are fan versions of old favorites. Click the thumbs to see them full size, or surf the Diablo 3 or Diablo 1 & 2 fan art galleries for hundreds more cool pics.

More Diablo 2 Jigsaws

With the Image Gallery back to full functionality, I’ve added four more huge overview images to the Diablo 2 jigsaw gallery. This batch shows off a variety of locations; Claw Viper Temple Level 2, The Ancients plateau in Act 5, the Inner Cloister and Cathedral from Act 1, and an interesting historical image the D2 team released during development, showing off the 3d modeling and architectural techniques they used to create the Palace in Lut Gholein. These and dozens of others can be seen in the Diablo 1 & 2 Jigsaw Gallery.

Original D2 Box Art Inspiration

1

Bashiok posted a cool photo of the original piece of artwork by Gerald Brom, a painting that was used as the inspiration for the Diablo 2 box art. The art depicts a skeletal version of the Dark Wanderer; i.e. Diablo while still in human form. (A state of affairs that creates no end of confusion amongst fan site gallery operators, who must decide whether to file it under D2 character art, D2 monster art, or D2 misc art.)

Diablo 2 Jigsaw Images

Another batch of Diablo 2 jigsaw images to enliven your weekend. This bunch features one post-release creation, a classic D2 magazine ad from 1999, a Google Map version of Sanctuary, and an odd jigsaw from the Act 2 desert. The last one is the most interesting, since it appears to be an error by our earlier, uninformed selves, with monsters on a level above one of the Tal Rasha tomb entrances.

Spicing up the holiday time Diablo drought, here are some freshly-added pieces of fan art. These four were originally posted on Blizzard.com some years ago, but have not been previously seen in our extensive (500+ shots!?) fan art gallery.
