Skills are In — Attributes are Out

An article on Joystiq surveys a number of recent RPGs and notes that the once universal system of player-customized character stats is fading away. The characters in recent titles like Skyrim and Mass Effect 3 had no attributes at all, and as we know, while Diablo III retains attributes, they are auto-assigned with level ups and can only be boosted with equipment.

Blizzard’s CMs Defend D3 Character Non-Permanance

There are two simple reactions to the fact that many features have been iterated, re-iterated, and de-iterated back to their starting point during Diablo III’s development. The first is that it demonstrates the importance of debating the pros and cons of various features, since the devs are clearly open to changing their plans through testing. The second is that there’s no point in paying any real attention to whatever they say right now, since they’ll probably say the opposite next month/week/year.

Blizzard Defends Skill Point Removal

A fan referenced the “97 billion possible character builds” quote from Blizzcon 2010, and asked how the math had changed now that the max skills at one time per char is 6, instead of 7. Bashiok had clearly consulted with his superiors on that issue, and had a FAQ-style post, with a bonus confusing mathematical metaphor, all ready to go.
