On the Drawing Board #25: Fixing Attributes

In a long thread in our Diablo 3 community forum, talking about a fan’s big wish list of Loot 2.0 changes, the conversation moved to something not addressed in the OP; attributes. Most players complain about how attributes work in Diablo 3, and most players think that attributes need to be “fixed” in some way as part of the Loot 2.0 itemization overhaul, whether that’s a minor change in a patch or a huge change in the Diablo 3 Expansion.

Diablo III’s Attributes via Items System is Lacking?

There’s a nice analytical-article about Diablo III over on Gamasutra, in which Josh Bycer studies the game systems and evaluates their pros and cons. All the analysis in the article has been seen many times in news posts, comments, and forum threads here, but the article is a good collection of some of the critical thinking about Diablo III’s pros and cons.

Skills are In — Attributes are Out

An article on Joystiq surveys a number of recent RPGs and notes that the once universal system of player-customized character stats is fading away. The characters in recent titles like Skyrim and Mass Effect 3 had no attributes at all, and as we know, while Diablo III retains attributes, they are auto-assigned with level ups and can only be boosted with equipment.

Blue Defends Attribute Changes

Bashiok continued his struggle to defend all the big game feature changes, taking on the changes to attributes in a series of posts in two threads. Diablo 3’s Character Window Improvements

One perpetual complaint of Diablo II players was that game’s Lying Character Screen. Due to code errors and patch changes in how various stats were calculated (there’s more explanation in the DiabloWiki article) many of the displayed numbers were incorrect, and joined the lack of other key stats (Magic Find, damage reduction, etc) to make the overall display of character statistics less than fully informative.
