Weekend Rewind: The Art Controversy Movie

While looking through some of the archives the other day, I hit upon this old gem: the palette-shifted version of the WWI 2008 gameplay movie created by Sozou. His effort was perhaps the peak of Mt. Art Controversy, edited version of the movie created a great deal of discussion at the time, and while most fans said they preferred the more colorful style of Diablo 3, there was no shortage of people who professed a preference for the grimmer, darker visuals of the modified movie.

I watched it yesterday, for the first time in more than a year, and was much less impressed. Perhaps I’ve gotten used to the art style of Diablo 3 by now; like most of you guys, I’ve seen a lot more of the game, including the Act Two screens, and was able to play the game at Blizzcon 2008 and 2009, where I thought it looked awesome. But whatever the reason, the darker version of the movie looked drab and gloomy, and those old photoshopped controversy screenshots now look fairly silly.

Naturally, you may disagree, which is sort of the whole point of the Internet. Watch the movie again, check out some of the controversy screenshots, and see if your opinions have changed over the past year+.

  1. The music in WoW does a fantastic job of supporting the game, incredibly atmospheric and always perfectly compliments the area its play in. A mark of its quality is that it can stand on its own though and from what I’ve heard so far it’ll be no different with the Diablo 3 music.

I have a cassette tape (remember those) that I got from Blizzard years ago of Diablo 2 music and I used to listen to it all the time.  I also have the Echoes of War which I’d recommend to anyone who appreciates their music.
