The Last Year of WoW?

There’s been no Bliz CM forum action of note yet this week, but this post and the quick reply, in their B.net EU D3 forum, made me laugh.

Is this the final year of World of Warcraft ?
ES: Skyrim 11.11.11, Diablo 3 and Darksiders 2 in 2012… This games will bury ageing WoW.

Takralus: The Diablo forum is not the place for this thread.

So what forum should he have used, then?

  1. “So what forum should he have used, then?”

How about the WoW forums? 🙂

I have a feeling WoW will still live on for quite a while.

  2. WoW-killer game jokes become old, the game won’t die for a long time.
Skyrim won’t have that much impact and definatly not Darksides2.
Diablo3 may do some damage to WoW’s amount of players, but who cares they are still Blizzardfans.
I’d rather be more concerned about Star Wars Old Republic MMO

    • wow is just a cess pool for noobs and casuals  true gamers moved on to better things

      • “True gamers” lolololol
Nobody cares what you think a true gamer likes. The numbers speak for themselves. Getting more non-gamers to play a game is a good thing from a companies point of view, and it isn’t like people don’t spend lots of time on WoW, which is at least one sign of a hardcore gamer.

      • It’s because a fscked up internet community that people starting to stereotype WoW players as noobs and casuals, Please tell me Oh Wise One Highlen what is a better thing for a “true gamer” according to your standards?

Taste is unspeakable off and age is out of the question. But I guess it’s easy to pick on the weak.

      • Using the term “true gamer” is not a valid point.

  3. Great news, thanks.

  4. I was wondering about the lack of updates, apparently the reason is a lack of things to report.

  5. It’s so sad to notice how the official D3 forums changed from a glorious source of juicy and official infos… to a very annoying, uninspired and uninteresting place to share frustrations about beta and 2012 delay). Yet developers fidn the time to lock a useless thread.

But wait, Fuuuuuuuuuuu Fighters will be at Blizzcon, can’t wait…

    • When have the Official forums ever been anything other than like they are now?  There is a reason I never use/read/look-at the Official forums.

    • Exclussive news. Developers now lock threads on the official forums. That’s why the game is delayed for 2012…

If people would stop posting crap they might free some time for the devs to get their job done in time I guess.

      • Well in the US forums he would have been banned and the thread deleted, so compared to that the EU /lock is quite lenient.

  6. what the hell is darksiders 2?

    • The sequel to Darksiders, I presume

    • You fail… darksiders is awesome… basically it’s a 3rd person hack and slash rpg that focuses pretty much completely on combat for the progression and has some platformer and puzzle game mixed in… and it has a portal gun type weapon!… it’s kind of like god of war… but you play as one of the four hoursemen of the apocalypse… war in the first… the sequel will be death and have 5 times the content with more rpg elements the devs say…

    • A game that has nothing to do with WoW.

  7. Well speaking that people are still playing everquest and it now has 17expansions and have an 18th in the works.  I am not entirely sure that WOW will ever die.    It will continue in some way, shape, or form for a very long time.

  8. Thanks for this update, Flux, really important news.

    • 1st there is not that much going on and it is better to have something than nothing.  Have you read the blue tracker lately?

And if you think you can do a better job I suggest you make a site, get it wildly popular, and then we can come to your site and see what a terrific job you are doing.   🙄

  9. Meh, I don’t care if they post random things like this. It made me lol, and I know updates will come eventually.

  10. It’s actually healthy business-wise for a 7-year-old game like WoW to have it’s fanbase move on – to a NEW Blizzard title(s).

WoW was a wonderful MMORPG phenomenon. But the MMORPG genre has grown terribly stale. And it’s now time to branch out into new directions (or in Diablo 3’s case, revisit a poorly represented genre (OARPG).

As for posting about the competition on Blizzard forums, well, it’s their forums. They set the rules. Can’t really do much about it.

  11. lol that poster was a troll… that’s the real reason the thread was locked…

  12. Post more news! I don’t care what it is I check this site daily and die when there isn’t 3+ new news stories.

  13. I thought Darksiders 2 got delayed to 2013…

Also, WoW will never die as long as Blizz is making money off it… as Muggs said, Everquest is a prime example for how much an mmo can be milked and Everquest peaked at what, 1 million subscribers in its prime? Considering WoW got to 12 times that… yeah… maybe they will finally shut the servers down some time around 2050… 😉

    • They said it would be delayed until fiscal year 2013 (which actully starts on April 2012 for THQ) and last month they said June 2012.  Really looking forward to it.

  14. ‘lol that poster was a troll… that’s the real reason the thread was locked…’

    the poster or flux?

  15. You do realize WoW still have 11million subs, right?
Even the numbers took a drop it is still by far the largest sub based MMO out there.

  16. You guys need to cool your jets wanting breaking Diablo III news every day. The major hype levels from beta starting are beginning to taper off and we’ve got anywhere from just over three months to nine months until the release of D3 to go. This is going to be the norm most of the way.

    • We have D3 news every day. Usually a lot of it. Sometimes there are slightly OT posts or jokes or the like as well, just to mix things up. There were 6 news items posted Oct 3. This was the first thing on the 4th, with a 4000 word wizard gameplay report a few hours later, and people are like, “where’s the new news!?”

  17. There’s about 20 of these posts a week, at least there was back when I played WoW/lived on the forums. Except it was more, “Rift/Age of Conan/Aion/Peggle will kill WoW”. The only thing that can kill WoW is Blizzard.

  18. This is called the calm before the storm. 😉   (Blizzcon)

    • I’m curious about the next wow xpac, though it is a little odd that the big mid-cycle content drop is still a couple months out.  Steals the thunder a little.

      • They’ve done the same thing in the past expansions.  Nothing unusual this year, except they look to be hitting a new expansion sooner then typical holiday season releases.

  19. The new MMO still has at least another 4 years to release, probably more.

WoW will still be making a ton of money then, a significant amount a few years after that, and some money a few years after that.  It is a religion for many people.

  20. like a certain kind of people know when to move on …

Friend: hey pal i just got skyrim it looks incredible, wanna have a look at it ?
    wow-player: can i play it online ?
Friend: ehm, no but it will most likely be game of the year!
    wow-player: i pass!
Friend: how about darksiders 2 ?
wow-player: god of war spin off, i pass!
Friend: ok, i see it now you are just waiting for next big thing … Diablo 3 ?
wow-player: just 6 skills an no raids, i pass! wow is still the best!

i guess knights of the old republic and guild wars 2 could take a bit of the cake but those 3 games have almost nothing in common with wow.

  21. I’m sure WoW will live on for a bit longer untilt he next best mmo comes along. Though if I had to choose to play Skyrim or WoW, Skyrim wins hands down.

  22. Skyrim and Darksiders 2 look okay-ish, SWTOR is way overhyped(Warhammer Online hyped) so it’ll fail after a few months once the “omg it’s star wars” feel wears off. Diablo 3 will take a few people from WoW but it’s still a blizzard game and the RMAH will mean blizzard may actually want WoW players to switch depending on how successful it is.
The last 40+ MMOs haven’t even dented WoW and every time a new MMO comes by, everyone screams “this new MMO is awesome, going to kill WoW” and then the MMO goes free to play a year later. The only thing that makes WoW lose subscribers is WoW itself.

  24. I quit wow a while back… recently I got a free account (you only get to level to 20, and a lot of features are off limits) just to see how it’s doing…
    I don’t regret quitting in the least.  It’s evolved into a game i don’t like very much…

That said, WoW could stop doing updates ENTIRELY, reduce their support by HALF, and still have a lot more than a year left to live.  The guy on the forums is either an idiot, or a troll…

  25. I couldn’t even remember how many games have been named WoW killer but what I remember is WoW is still king in its genre.

  26. Diablo2 still running, WoW will stay alive untill last thousand ppls play it.
As Wildmoon said, there was like 5 “official” wow-killers (AoC, Warhammer, Darkfall, Aion, etc), and where they are now?

  27. I hope it dies and everybody forgets about it!

  28. DISCLAIMER: I play WoW, have an 85 and an account full of low level alts.  OK.

This has always been an absurd topic.  I would imagine WoW will stay alive as long as income from monthly fees outweighs server cost and maintenance.  Let’s imagine that it is 2020 and WoW patches are done (no dev costs).  Even if there are just 2 servers online in the FAR distant future with 30k players/server that is 60k x 13.99/month = $840,000 revenue per month… it doesn’t cost $840k to run two server banks per month.  Blizzard pockets the delta.

No need to pile on to a game that has helped prove that PC gaming is still a profitable venture.
