Reaper of Souls Targeted for 2014, Plus Loot 2.0 for D3C

There was no word on a projected release date in the initial news flurry, but as Jakob pointed out in an email… the official Reaper of Souls page says “Coming in 2014.” Scroll down to the bottom and you see this:

One other unrelated point; we put the info into the mega D3:RoS post but I’ve seen a ton of questions about it since then, so obviously not everyone has noticed. The Loot 2.0 changes will be added to D3C, in a free patch. They’re not just for D3X (though presumably the level 70, new skills, new tiers of gear, etc, are RoS-only). A quote from a CM on the Polish forum confirmed this:

It’s likely that when the expansion comes out (or shortly before that) there will be a 2.0 patch.
Wuluxar: Changes to the game systems will come in a patch preceeding the release of the expansion – they will be available to all players, including the ones that don’t have the expansion (of course for free).

In related news, a brand new tweet from @Diablo says that other new stuff will go into D3C, pre-expansion:

Loot Runs are randomized dungeons, monsters, and a mini-boss that drops sweet loot. Also, they’ll be pre-patched for free. #D3RoS —Diablo

If you haven’t already, you should watch Josh’s presentation from Gamescom explaining all about Loot 2.0: it’s 8 minutes of new info and you can see it embedded if you click through.

    • More like 2015 Christmas if you ask me about whats the meaning of “soon”.
They will have technical/design issues of course.

      • I dunno.. this looked MUCH further along than I think anyone was expecting. I think its safe to say mid-2014 latest.

        • Dude, Diablo 3 trailer in 2008 looked almost completed and it still took them a couple of years to release the game.

          It’s Blizzard we’re talking about.

          • You need to know this is the opening cinematic. The one showed in 2008 was the draft teaser cinematic. In fact, you don’t see any of those scenes in cinematic of the actual release. The interesting thing is Blizzard only releases opening cinematic (Intro) when the release date is near (usually several months ahead). It should point to the early 2014 release instead of late 2014. Also, because this is an one-act expansion not 4 acts like in original D3 and it’s already playable at Gamescom so I assume the development of the expansion would be much much shorter than the base game.

  1. Blizzards games always look very polished early on. It doesnt matter. Starcraft 2 basically looked finished 2 years before release (and probably was, until 2.0 happened). Diablo 3 seemed complete 1 year before release, when they decided to remove most of it.
    Just not how Blizzard work.

Hopefully it does release early, but from what we saw today, it could as easily be summer 2015 as it could be 2014.

  2. This is an expansion, they are not tweaking any of the core mechanics. I don’t see any reason why it would not be released sooner rather than later.

Sc2 hots was released 2 years after sc2wol. So a summer release of ros would make sense

  3. Is there information of the collector’s edition?

If nor, I guess they are saving that for Blizzcon

    • They haven’t said anything yet about Iron man/born mode, or removal of auction house, etc. I hope they will clarify this.

“We want to implement a lot of the new systems and features in a pre-expansion patch for free. That should include Paragon 2.0, Loot 2.0, Loot Runs, and Nephalem Trials. For now, you’ll need to purchase the expansion to play as the Crusader, explore Act V, unlock the Mystic, and level up to 70. These details may change as development moves along, but we want some of the core gameplay improvements to be available for everyone.”

For now it seems Mystic is RoS only.

  5. QUOTE

Sequels aren't nearly as hard. 2014 seems like a sure thing.

Right, no engine or tools/deve systems to build, many assets already available, etc. Also one act vs four.

The D3C scripted demos / alpha gameplay all looked pretty polished, but it’s easy to do if you’re just focusing on one specific area of the game. They could tweak the specific demo run, even if acts 3 or 4 were not yet ready.

I suspect the majority of the Westmarch and Pandemonium game world is already done, and theyre probably in the iteration stage on skills, builds, effects, AI, etc. Hopefully nothing gets scrapped at this point and restarted. IMO, the Loot changes are probably what has already internally delayed the expansion when compared to the relatively accurate leaked Blizzard roadmap.

  6. So any chance there will be another new playable class, announced later? I love the crusader but LOD spoiled me.

    • Yeah I’m going to be seriously disappointed if there’s only one new class. All that other stuff is nice, but I really want a proper summoner class.

  7. Meh. I sincerely hope they have another class to announce….for it to take all the way down the road to 2014.

  8. Great work Diablo 3 team!!! The changes is a ground-zero and just as I expect how Diablo 3 should be.
    1. Enchanting. Who doesn’t want to gamble on re-rolling a bad stats.
    2. Demogrify (not sure if I spelled it right). Who doesn’t want to customize legendary/powerful items the way they want it.
    3. Paragon Points. Who doesn’t want to upgrade their skills even through grinding.
    4. Smart Loot. Who doesn’t want to get less but worthy loots and something that really rolls based on your current build.
    5. The Dungeon. Not as I expected but hopefully they can put in uber bosses for each level. LOL.

  9. The new paragon 2.0 system was completely taken from Borderlands 2 (Badass points) which in a Diablo game is not a good solution (on one char is it ok, but on all chars, it is not good).
They said that legendaries will be a build-changers. So how can e.g. Serpent Sparker change the way you play with your character? Spawning hydra on enemy kill? How it will change my build??? Or Jawbreaker, which reduces your cooldown by 4% (4 ????).

    • id rather see them make items bind on pickup, or top tier items not sellable on AH.
if they’re doing a wow 2.0 mode on this game, they might as well take it that one extra step…

  10. more like WoW 2.0
increased level cap,. better loot, one extra act.
it still feels like they’re using the wow formulae more than the diablo formulae,.. and catering to casual players.

I don’t have high hopes for this expansion.
